Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is serviceable enough, but a grand return to form it isn’t. Frankly, it feels a little warmed over. If you’ve been pining for a Prince of Persia game that’s closer to what you played last generation, this one is will do for a rental. Here’s to a more proper return to follow soon.
Even with those flaws in mind, The Forgotten Sands is a solid action-platforming title that comes rather close to re-capturing the feel of 2003’s The Sands of Time. While it misses the mark of nailing the same sense of magic and wonder of the original trilogy, fans who had missed this style and approach in 2008's Prince of Persia offering should welcome this new-yet-familiar adventure with open arms.
PoP: The Forgotten Sands is a tale of two halves. On one side you've got some brilliantly designed platforming, with Ubisoft able to breathe new life into what could have been quite stale gameplay. Sadly, the combat, of which there is a lot, fails to do anything interesting. It's too basic and as a result dull and repetitive. As a whole, the game lacks the magic and beauty of the previous game in the series, but judged on its own merits offers enough to be worth a look.
