Fable III has issues--tedious combat, emotionally distant characters, and weak moral choices among them--but its biggest problem is Fable II. The latest adventure in Albion plays so similar to its predecessor that it struggles to establish an identity of its own. The small tweaks don't dig very deeply and the cosmetic changes are welcome but insubstantial. So, this is ultimately a really enjoyable game that will deliver a serious case of deja vu for anyone who spent time playing the last game.

With Fable III, Lionhead have finally achieved the perfect balance through offering their most impressive script streamlined through a quantity of refined features that provide a core experience where your very morals are repeatedly put to the test. Fulfilling promises made since the series’ conception, players are now able to truly shape the very kingdom that they traverse - an accomplishment that makes the title one of the most compelling and rewarding additions to the Xbox 360 library this year.

Fable 3 is the best Fable yet. It's mature and thought provoking, with a final act that will genuinely surprise and confound you. It could've been a masterpiece, but its many technical problems bring it down. It's frustrating, but play it anyway, if only for the wonderfully quirky quests and the way your choices genuinely pull at your conscience. Or just to kick the chickens, whatever.
