Overall, DiRT Showdown is an enjoyable romp through the, well, dirtier side of the franchise. Some of the technical excitement, like nailing a corner with precision and adjusting the car specifications to match the conditions of the road, is lost in the transition unless you set the difficulty to Advanced. But most of the new modes still manage to be entertaining, all with the graphical polish and varied tracks the series is known for.

DiRT Showdown is not a broken game; it's just very slap-dash, seemingly thrown together from pieces of ideas but never made fully whole. Courses repeat over and over and the difficulty never gets too high where events become a challenge, thus leaving the player almost bored with the task of completing each event. It looks nice, but it's clearly a shell of its former self, with no real connections to the series that everyone knows past the name itself.

In the end, Showdown probably isn’t the sort of game you’d expect to bear the DiRT name. In an attempt to make the franchise more accessible to everyone, Codemasters has all but abandoned the focus on rally racing and technical ability. Longtime franchise fans will likely be disappointed by the departure, but there’s no denying that Showdown succeeds more often than not at what it aims to do.
