Summary

The Mario experience of your dreams has arrived and is bursting with creativity... including yours! Play a near-limitless number of intensely creative Super Mario levels from players around the world. It’s easy enough to create your own levels with the Wii U GamePad controller that it may feel like you’re simply sketching out your ideas on paper, but you can now bring enemies and objects into a playable course in ways you could only dream of before. What was impossible in traditional Mario games is now impossibly fun, so let your imagination run wild!

As a bonus of sorts, the hub has its own version of the 10 Mario Challenge -- a 100 lives version, which basically grabs levels online and mixes them into a custom world. This is probably my favorite element of the game, as it does a good job of curating content and giving it to you in a rapid-fire format. ...However, it feels a bit more constrained than it needs to be, and is in dire need of updates or DLC to keep it going long term.

Super Mario Maker is worth checking out to prove what’s possible with the Wii U’s often-ignored gamepad controller. Few games have you staring at the second screen for longer stretches of time, and it just feels good to put stuff together. At the same time, the game is structured in a way that lets you skip level-creation altogether and just bounce around areas built by other people, so it can please different types of players.

The strange unlock system does not dissuade me, however, from proclaiming Super Mario Maker to be a bonafide classic for the Wii U. On the surface this is not a gigantic game -- the digital download is less than a gigabyte of data, after all -- but this little software that could allows for more imagination than anything else I've played this year.
