It’s admirable that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric tries so many new things, but every path it follows is a dead end. While the environments look decent and collectibles help give the short story some legs, the lack of difficulty, variation, and personality ruins any chance it had of making Sonic relevant again. ...but from the looks of things this spinoff has already been run into the ground.

When I first saw the announcement for Sonic Boom, barring the weird Knuckles redesign, I was excited by the prospect of change. The Sonic series hasn't taken many risks in recent years, particularly when it comes to the 3D aspect of the franchise, and Big Red Button had a lot riding on its inaugural effort. Unfortunately, the game could have used a few more months in the hopper and taken many more risks. Better luck next time.

The game is a little more fun with a co-op buddy. One player uses the GamePad screen and the other wields a Wii Remote and Nunchuck while watching the TV. ...The already rough framerate becomes laughably low, and the textures and lighting take a huge hit. ...Unfortunately for fans and the Hedgehog himself, Sonic Boom is a blemished bore.

Sonic Boom’s poor quality reflects a quick and dirty rush job by Big Red Button Entertainment. Rise of Lyric shouldn’t exist as a Sonic game or as a current-gen game, because it fails to meet the standards of both. Instead, we have nothing but over-hype and controversy from its redesigned characters with absolutely nothing to back it up.

Sonic may be fast, but he is not fast enough to outrun this abysmal game. Repetitive and ineffective combat, annoying banter, and dreadful AI plague Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric throughout its very short campaign. The platforming is decent at times and the addition of two player co-op can be fun, but there is very little to find likeable beyond that. Even for the most diehard of Sonic fans that want a little backstory on the new television series, stay far away from this abomination.

Sonic Boom is a bad game. There is no other way to say it. I won’t get excited for another return of the hedgehog…OK that is probably a lie, but either way, don’t buy this game. Pick up the infinitely more enjoyable Lost World, or one of the other fantastic Wii U exclusives this holiday season. Just stay far, far away from this toxic hedgehog.

Each and every one of them is so broken and unenjoyable that it’s hard to imagine getting a group of friends to last through even a single match. Overall, even if the engine ran smoothly and the bugs were squashed, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric wouldn’t be that great of a game. As-is, it’s an unfinished mess, astounding only in how rapidly you can count its flaws.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is a failure at some basic levels of gaming. While it's understandable that a franchise may want to move beyond the simple elegance of its origins, a muddled web of poorly connected and even more poorly executed systems is not the answer. The Sonic name deserves better than this, and so do consumers.

Sonic Boom is a boring game at its very best, with its simpleton’s idea of progress. There’s no real sense of impact in the combat, and the camera is absolutely worthless. It’s a game that frequently doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. It’s ugly. It exists to sell toys and a cartoon series. It’s depressing to try and play.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal offers some fun platforming and treasure hunting moments, but its tedious mazes and poor story ultimately make it a drag. This one needed more time with a level editor and less time spent forcing players to repeat content.

Sonic Boom:Rise of Lyric is basic. It features simple gameplay and simple combat, and despite featuring a lot of character interaction (mostly successfully), the world and the main villain are wholly lacking in personality. Sonic Boom tries to take the series to new territory and to widen the scope of the adventure, which is commendable, but in the end Big Red Button never delve below the surface and are therefore unable to deliver anything truly memorable.

This lack of direction is an especially ironic failing for a character who was once defined by his single-minded forward momentum. The time is clearly long overdue for Sonic to take a well-earned rest, get his breath back and only return once Sega has worked out where he's supposed to be going. It pains me to say it, but Sonic Boom needs to be the last noise we hear from the blue hedgehog for a very long time.

E allora no, non va bene.
