In Sonic Boom™: Rise of Lyric, Sonic and his friends Tails, Knuckles and Amy encounter an ancient tomb sealed deep within an island, where they come across a powerful snake-like villain named Lyric. The group must put aside their differences and work together as a team to save the world from Lyric’s evil plan and his army of war mongering robots!

They will race across ancient ruins, the depths of the ocean and even back in time… This may be their biggest adventure yet. Do you have what it takes to help Sonic and friends defeat the evil mastermind?

It’s admirable that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric tries so many new things, but every path it follows is a dead end. While the environments look decent and collectibles help give the short story some legs, the lack of difficulty, variation, and personality ruins any chance it had of making Sonic relevant again. ...but from the looks of things this spinoff has already been run into the ground.

When I first saw the announcement for Sonic Boom, barring the weird Knuckles redesign, I was excited by the prospect of change. The Sonic series hasn't taken many risks in recent years, particularly when it comes to the 3D aspect of the franchise, and Big Red Button had a lot riding on its inaugural effort. Unfortunately, the game could have used a few more months in the hopper and taken many more risks. Better luck next time.

The game is a little more fun with a co-op buddy. One player uses the GamePad screen and the other wields a Wii Remote and Nunchuck while watching the TV. ...The already rough framerate becomes laughably low, and the textures and lighting take a huge hit. ...Unfortunately for fans and the Hedgehog himself, Sonic Boom is a blemished bore.
