Summary

Born was created from the absolute nothingness: The Void. But somehow he separates himself from the black emptiness and appears in the world. This is where his long odyssey begins, in which he will learn how to use the colors around him to gain powerful abilities and transform the world.

However, his experiences come at a high price. The Void must be one. It seeks to reclaim him and will never stop chasing him, destroying everything in its path along the way.

To survive, Born will have to condemn the earth he walks to its inevitable obliteration by The Void...

If you’re looking for something a little different, then Nihilumbra is for you. While the game suffers from a poor balance in difficulty, it’s easily made up for with its rich storytelling and beautiful hand-drawn world. At £6.99 it’s a little pricey for a game with such a short story, but if you’re up for a real challenge with Void Mode then Nihilumbra is definitely worth a purchase.

Using the GamePad to change the interactivity of surfaces works very well and also makes for a great variety of ways to play with the world. Nihilumbra is a beautiful, haunting, if not altogether philosophically poignant, romp through a world fully realized through a masterful marriage of gameplay and presentation.

You’ll need these moments of levity, since Nihilumbra is a very dark game. The omnipresent narrator starts out the game by belittling your character, which makes sense given the game’s philosophy of nothing having any meaning. This is something that one can overcome, but it took a bit for me to handle it given my own history with depression.
