It definitely delivers on the promise of letting me play with charmingly realized versions of many of my favorite DC heroes and villains, and it even presents a setting with lots of great surprises, challenges, and systems that promote variety. As a longtime DC fan, I do wish it had given me the chance to dig into more locations and plot elements from the comics, but the biggest hurdle for me to clear is the bizarre cameos.

Lego Batman 3 may not be the greatest adventure on the Wii U, but it’s certainly still well worth a look for series fans. Repetitive gameplay elements and some occasionally awkward controls bring down the Dark Knight’s latest, and the lack of an explorable open world feels like a step back from its predecessor, but fun writing, excellent co-op, and lots of LEGO charm are more than enough to seal the deal for DC devotees.

All things considered, it’s impossible to avoid the fact that LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is still a LEGO game, so you basically know what you are getting into. If you want a new LEGO game, then pick this up. It’s well put together and is especially fun in multiplayer. If not, then there’s nothing really fantastic about LEGO Batman 3 that says “you must buy me.” Maybe put it on your wishlist for when the LEGO itch hits you, but don’t feel too bad if you pass the game up.
