Cheat codes, character skins, and mini-games make Retro City Rampage a compelling package, most notably on the PlayStation Vita, where neatly digestible gameplay loops allow for quick bites of arcade-y fun. Of course, buying on either PlayStation platform will net you both versions as part of Sony's cross-buy promotion. All of this is supported by my favorite game soundtrack in years, cementing Retro City Rampage as like, totally radical, dude.

There's plenty to like about Retro City Rampage from its nods to our childhoods to its easy to get behind gameplay to its arcade mini-games, but the story -- the main hook of the title -- just doesn't stand up. Player's quest is just an excuse to get to the next reference, the missions tend to be cheap, and checkpoints aren't forgiving.

Retro City Rampage is still worth playing for its simple, accessible gameplay and charming, lovingly crafted world that Provinciano created. It's the perfect game for gamers, an experience carefully executed to appeal directly to them. Seasoned players will enjoy it on a higher level, smiling at every sly wink and clever nod, but even the uninitiated should have a good time waging a one-man crime spree through Theftropolis.
