Summary

Players take on the role of a curious flying Technicolor kite-like being. Along their travels through the vibrant world, players will be able to uncover secrets by interacting with elements around them in different ways such as carrying characters to new areas on their back or flying over objects to illuminate them. The world of Hohokum is full of surprise; even running into certain objects can be its own reward as the interaction produces a tune or sounds that add to the level’s music track. From the way a player navigates the world to the various ways characters communicate to the abstract vivid artwork, Hohokum is an expressive and mesmerizing universe.

Hohokum is the latest title in a long lineage of artistically inclined, thoroughly unique PlayStation exclusives. From Vib Ribbon through to LocoRoco, Flower, Tokyo Jungle, Sound Shapes and more, it’s in good company, and deserves to be uttered in the same breath as those much-loved cult classics.

As a game, it is hard to recommend Hohokum. With loose goals and a lack of action, Hohokum may receive the similar criticism that Proteus received when it was released on the PlayStation Vita. However, as an experience, Hohokum is wonderful. A charming, charismatic trip through a plethora of multi-coloured worlds that you can pick up and play in minutes, but get lost in for hours.

Hohokum offers more than you'd expect but less than you'd want; without gameplay depth to back up its visuals, it sparks the imagination but doesn't kindle it. Its audiovisual melange is hypnotic up to a point, but its charm is fleeting, leaving you with a hollow gameplay experience at its core. Still, I'm glad I spent time in Hohokum's whimsical world. Its design sense is unquestionably sound, and it's easy to lose yourself in its cheerful facade, if for only a few hours.
