Generations ago, the realm of Alefgard was plunged into darkness by the terrible and treacherous Dragonlord, ruler of all monsters. Mankind was robbed of the power to build and forced to wander the ruins of their former home, scrounging and scavenging in the dust to survive. Now it’s up to you, a Legendary Builder chosen by the Goddess herself, to return the power of creation to the people and rebuild Alefgard. Only when the wonder of imagination has been returned will mankind be able to overthrow the evil Dragonlord once and for all!

All in all Dragon Quest Builders is an absolutely spectacular surprise. For me, it's a far superior experience to Minecraft. It’s topped off by having an end goal. Credits that roll and bosses that need defeating give the entire experience genuine purpose. I’ve had next to no interest in the sandbox building genre up to this point, however there’s enough structure here to compel me to push onwards. And onwards. And onwards. Someone save me.

The story-advancing draw of quests goes hand-in-hand with the depth of a crafting system that cleverly uses monster drops as some of the game's building tools. Whether you want to focus on completing assignments or build with no specific purpose, the game is feature-rich enough to suck up untold hours, even if this happens to be your first Dragon Quest experience.

A unique take on Minecraft that celebrates all the action-RPG tropes that Dragon Quest has come to embody. A much more accessible game than previous entries in the series for a casual audience, and one that’s sure to be universally loved by kids and adults alike. Dragon Quest Builders is a single-player experience to the core, and it knows it. Aside from a few pacing issues, this is the perfect time sink for anyone that loves the creativity of Minecraft, but wants more of a trail of breadcrumbs to follow.
