"Mankind Divided" does many many things pitch perfect. The storytelling is interesting and deep; character progression varied and dynamic; and action fluid and enjoyable. The world is "open," but not too open that it becomes tedious. Overall, it's great, but not perfect. Player choice agency isn't as deep as advertised, and the combat gets very easy once you master a few basics, discouraging experimentation. The set pieces are also underwhelming (I beat the boss by hiding in a vent and throwing grenades at him). But, it's still a worthy piece of sci-fi and should be checked out.

A thrilling blending of old and new styles, "Axiom Verge" wears its "Metroid" inspiration on its sleeve but doesn't bat an eye in skewering conventions or niceties. This is a dark, weird, horrific, and cryptic game whose world grabs and won't let go. It is, however, somewhat clunky around the edges, and not without a few pacing issues. But, they hardly distract from an otherwise praiseworthy indie experience.

An intense and brutal surprise. Who would have thought that the "Doom" remake would be one of the best shooters around? It puts gameplay first, making you feel fast and ferocious, swapping guns, executing enemies, jumping to the left and right ... all while inundating you with savage heavy metal. A must play for fans of shooters.

Stunning in so many ways, "Witcher 3" sets the bar for open world games very high. The world and visuals are thrilling, and the monsters brilliantly realized. Geralt himself has sort of a Logan/Wolverine like gruffness that is instantly appealing. Being able to customize his skills lets you take down enemies as you like, and discovering combos, makes you feel like a real monster hunter. While the story is great, it's does bog down from fantastical magical nonsense that sometimes just makes you shrug your acceptance and move on to the next sword fight. The difficulty scaling is frustrating, as is the reality of me killing the same bandits at level 20 that I was at level 1--don't these guys know who I am? Some typical open world pacing issues doesn't hold this game back from being among the must-buys of this console generation.

Lots to enjoy in this gritty action slaughter-fest set in Mordor. The story is basically Middle Earth fan-fiction (sorry, but it's true), with disposable characters and plot, but the dynamic combat, suite of powers, and tight gameplay make "Shadows" lots of fun to play. It improves on the first game in several meaningful ways, but is basically more of the same. The real star of the show is the orcs--which are simply the best. They're filled with personality, perfectly animated and acted, and just joyful in their reveling of orcishness. Not the best open world game, but the best one set in Middle Earth ... so there's that.

Brilliant Spidey action and storytelling. This is pure super hero fantasy fulfillment. Swinging feels smooth and exciting, the combat crunchy and stylish. The story and missions are the star of the show but I didn't have any problem going after all the collectibles and side missions. The story reimagines lots of lore but does so in a way that's more compelling, heart-felted, and understanding of the Spider-Man character than anything we've seen in the theatres since 2002. Bravo.

Dark Souls Remastered

This is one of the most influential video games of the 20-tens. It's macabre, chilling, ghastly, and very challenging. The combat is visceral and brutal ... and sometimes painfully plodding. Every move counts; there are no trash enemies. When you die, it sucks, when you succeed, you revel. Its filled with secrets and obtuse lore, and countless weapons for your experimentation. You can truly sculpt your character's stats, taking on the game however you prefer. It's not perfect though; it's old fashioned and clunky in many respects. The weapon and armor leveling system is unforgiving and grindy, and it's likely you'll just stick with your trusty long sword instead of investing time and resources into whatever new shiny trophy you picked up after killing a boss. If you're at all interested in action-RPGs, you must play Dark Souls--though I'd start with DS3 first.

Solid Star Wars action adventure. This game takes good bits from a variety of genres and mashes them together to create a satisfying, visceral, and challenging experience. The story is better than anything else Star Wars we've been given in the cinema (even though it's basically fan fiction), and the lightsaber action is very slick. It's authentic but still manages to break new ground and add to the universe in fun and interesting ways. Check it out if you need an injection of legitimately good Star Wars content in your life when the movies are letting us down.

I've spent more time playing Destiny 2 than any other video game. No other shooter feels so smooth, accurate, and empowering. The variety of guns is staggering; the special powers make you feel like a space-wizard; the enemies and difficulty perfectly balanced. Yes, its "looter shooter" format makes it repetitive, but you won't notice when you're running and gunning and throwing energy grenades and blasting dudes with nova bombs or lighting up bosses with your golden gun, etc. So satisfying, especially when you get a fireteam going. If you like shooters, you'll like Destiny, just make sure you use 3rd party resources to manage your inventory and to find players!

It's a nearly perfect open world game, giving you lots to do, numerous enemies to out-wit, and characters with which to engage. The world-building is exceptional, and the story grabs hold tightly to a magnificent sci-fi finale. Brilliant design across the board--except in the gameplay of it's typical sidequests which, while helping develop the world, are basically just "go here, kill that". Somber and evocative, "Vampyr" is a budget RPG that tells a great story. The action is fine, scaling nicely and offering enjoyable enemy variety, but once I settled into my move combos I was basically unstoppable. As a character-laden experience, you'll do lots and lots of talking ... but you get out what you put in. Being able to choose who lives and dies is gratifying, especially when you meet characters that just deserve it; however, as you learn more about their stories you'll find that things are never as simple as you'd think.

Very close to a perfect open world game. It streamlines the clutter and lets you focus on what's important: being an amazing samurai in a compelling portrayal of medieval Japan. It has a great story and voice acting, authentic swordplay, lots of options for customization, a beautiful look, and responsive gameplay. My only gripe is the limited collection of enemies, but, as a historical game, this is excusable. (no demons or monsters this time).
