For everything it sets out to do and accomplishes relatively well, Ultra Hyperball presents the same challenge in terms of recommending it that some of the other indie multiplayer games have had.
Ultra Hyperball presents itself as the sport of the future, but in reality it’s about as enthralling as a simple game of catch or kick the can. Springloaded pushed the boundaries of what you can do with hitting a ball really high, but that’s not saying a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. After a few matches you’ve a lot of what it has to offer and, even with the presence of multiplayer, it just isn’t engaging enough to keep anyone’s interest for very long.
Despite its visual and audio charm, Ultra Hyperball lacks any real depth and variety to make this a title worth remembering. The multiplayer modes can be fun, but it is a shallow experience that will wade out pretty quickly. The game does touch on an interesting idea of a being a sort of hacky sack sim, a pastime that is rarely explored upon in gaming but ultimately its ideas run dry far too soon.
