The tale that this first chapter in The Banner Saga weaves will have you gripped from start to finish. The player is left to exist in a world that has been meticulously crafted, whether that be the breathtaking art direction, the riveting efforts at world-building or the gameplay mechanics that underpin the experience. It is the difficult decisions that you must make that let it become more meaningful, even if some of your actions will ultimately lead to heartbreaking consequences.

The Banner Saga comes to Nintendo Switch via a fantastic and faithful port, its dire tale of survival and strategy completely intact. It plays well, it looks fantastic, and every battle and dialogue choice is here for the taking. The game pulls no punches in its journey to Switch, however, so be ready for some difficult trials ahead. The analog sticks on the Switch don’t always cooperate, and they’re the only real detriment to the experience.

Packed with a great campaign to venture through, as well as a narrative that plays to your choices and has meaningful impact no matter what you decide, The Banner Saga is still as good as it was when it launched back in 2014. Further, the Switch port is excellent, and is easily one of the best ways to play the game. I’m really excited to continue my adventure when the sequels land on the console over the next couple of months, and definitely recommend checking this one out.
