Swim Out doesn’t shake-up the genre in terms of its originality but even a well-worn idea can still be a decent one. The game’s summery feel results in a very relaxing experience and one ideal for short bursts especially in handheld mode. The genre may be getting a little crowded on Switch but Swim Out ranks higher than most.
While cool concepts and ideas are awash throughout Swim Out, the dawdling pace of the 100+ puzzles drowns the more novel ideas. This is, for better or worse, an alright puzzle game that just happens to be in a sea of better ones. Good for a laidback romp, but not for much else.
Pacing issues notwithstanding, Swim Out succeeds when played for a few minutes here and there. It’s non-linear nature (and lack of a timer) allows you to take your time with each puzzle, and easily move on to another. Puzzle enthusiasts will get a good Nintendo Switch game at a fair price, one that will exercise their brains. Just make sure to wait 30 minutes after eating before playing.
