That said, Super Cane Magic Zero is fun. It is bright, bold, mostly an engaging attempt at doing something different. If you like the oddball work of Sio then you’ll love this. Do bear in mind that most of the game is hand crafted so there is not a ton of replay value in it. This is in comparison to something like Double Fine’s upcoming RAD which is entirely procedural and distinctly different in its own right.
There are some things to like here. And the fact that Super Cane Magic Zero has been made by such a small team is worth applauding. I just wish it tried less hard to be funny and more hard to be fun. Cut down the loading times, give us a waypoint from time to time, and stop expecting us to pick up every item we see and we might have something worth spending time with. As is currently stands, Super Cane Magic Zero is just too frustrating to wholeheartedly enjoy.
I'm mostly disappointed in Super Cane Magic Zero. The fun, dumb world and deep RPG mechanics could have hooked me, but the punishing repetition and clunky combat kept me angry through almost all of my playtime. An extremely specific group of hardcore goofballs could have fun with Super Cane Magic Zero, but most players can find a better use for a group of friends.
