The thing is, I would have played SteamWorld Quest for 40 hours, flaws and all. It's brief in more ways than one but charming as hell. I hope Image & Form continues to make games and, to go one step further, never stops creating SteamWorld experiences.

SteamWorld Quest plays it too safe to satisfy hardcore card-crawlers, but the campy characters, gratifying combat, and splashy synergies make it an enticing option for those looking for a traditional turn-based RPG thatâs easy to wade into.

SteamWorld Quest may feature a charming cast of characters and an enjoyable battle system but its overall lack of variety and drab dungeons make it a tough game to universally recommend. If you want a top-notch RPG then play SteamWorld Heist instead.

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a delightful RPG experience. Though there are problems around its edges with prolonged battles and a weak overall narrative, its ability to maintain a deck-building card game inside a RPG in inventive ways continually is nothing short of awesome. Once it clicks with you, itâs hard to not stop theorycrafting, experimenting, and optimizing your deck.

My time with SteamWorld Quest was thoroughly satisfying, and in between playing lengthy Final Fantasy ports, I was glad to have a more compact experience close at hand. Rather than running out of steam, Hand of Gilgamech plays its cards rather perfectly.

Because of limited enemy variety and level design, it doesn’t change a whole lot throughout the campaign unless you actively play around with your combat options, but doing so is endlessly rewarding. Its simplified deckbuilding makes Quest an RPG that’s as accessible as it is flexible, and it’s one worth playing even if you don’t care about card games at all.

SteamWorld Quest is a diet RPG, but it still contains plentiful portions of Image & Form's unique charm and humor. Its card-based battle system is engaging, and you might find yourself enjoying it a lot even if you're not a big fan of digital card games. Expect a straightforward journey that ends much sooner than most RPGs, but maybe a 15-hour quest isn't such a bad thing in a genre that keeps piling on 100-hour epics.

Quest gives you a lot of complex combinations to play around with while also keeping things approachable enough to not feel daunting. Its uneven difficulty saps some enjoyment out of the otherwise whimsical journey through this new and gorgeous kingdom, but it's still one that is admirably accessible while deep enough to be engaging throughout its 20-hour adventure.

Add in some surprisingly good plot twists and emotional arcs and SteamWorld Quest is a game that storied RPG developers like Atlus and Square Enix could be proud of. The fact that this is Image & Form’s first outing in the genre begs the question of what exciting adventure the developers will rush headlong into next.

Steamworld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is an excellent addition to the Steamworld lineup and a fantastic game on its own merits. The story is simple but charming, and the gameplay alone is strong enough to carry players to the end. The sheer amount of customization and variety in character builds and combat offers a lot of enjoyable content to players both casual and hardcore. If you're a fan of RPGs, then you should try out Steamworld Quest.

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a funny, charming deck-building RPG that laughs in the face of fantasy and adventure tropes. In the end, though, the game falls victim to repetitive gameplay and ends up overstaying its welcome.

When taken as an overall package, there’s no getting away from expressing how brilliant and addictive the card-based approach to RPG combat is here. In a game that might not dart as wildly away from its established artistic and aesthetic roots, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech more than lives up to expectations — expectations that were already, justifiably, set on high thanks to one of the finest first impressions, that is its opening chapter, for some time.

SteamWorld Quest may be Image & Form's finest game yet, presenting a charming tale and a nuanced combat system wrapped up in a wonderfully cohesive style.
Anthony Bacchus — May 08, 2019
The card battle system is incredibly addictive and offers a ton of gameplay options to boot. And while the story is somewhat by the numbers, the memorable characters, dialogue and rewarding gameplay elevate it above the pack. Even if you’re not big on card games, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is another home run for Image & Form and a definite must-buy on Nintendo Switch.

While not a fully deep experience for those familiar to the genre, Image & Formâs first attempt at a card-based RPG still pays off in spades with a satisfying gameplay hook and journey that oozes with colorful charm.

*With words like economy and currency popping up, we feel it is important to let you know SteamWorld Quest does not have any micro-transactions and that everything you need to play is presented to you through regular gameplay mechanics.

Steam World Quest isn't a perfect RPG, but it's a damn good one. If you want some bitesized, simple card battling mechanics on the go, this is an excellent choice
Gavin Lane — Apr 23, 2019
Remarkably solid and satisfying, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a card battler with an abundance of charm in its art, mechanics and writing. The presentation is slick, the dialogue’s witty and the gameplay’s addictive, although nothing about it feels particularly special – not in the way SteamWorld Dig 2 felt special. It does what it does well, though, and it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable time in that universe.

Image and Form has prioritised cleverly when creating this game. The studio has established a massive audience over the years, widening the horizon of the SteamWorld franchise and showing that the studio can make games in any genre you can care to think of. We wouldn't be surprised if the developer were to give us a serious survival game with Guitar Hero-like mechanics next, and we're guessing we'd give that a high score as well.
GameCentral — Apr 29, 2019
The battle system is very well thought out and the variety in the characters and their abilities is excellent but SteamWorld never feels quite as refined as the previous games. That’s perhaps a good reason to hope for a sequel, but to be honest we’re happy for them to simply move on and tackle another genre. Having one franchise take on so many different styles of games is a fascinating thing and even when it’s not a complete success the end result is never less than interesting.

New mechanics and a change of paint don’t stop SteamWorld Quest from being just as satisfying, addictive, and well put together as its predecessors. The mix of card collecting, deck building, and RPG battling comes naturally, and the cast of fun characters that accompany that action left me smiling for hours on end. Despite a few issues with map design and clunky dungeon controls, SteamWorld Quest is a gem of a game, and a must-play for anyone with a Nintendo Switch.

With wonderful combat and more charm than any game I can name off the top of my head Steamworld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a very easy recommendation from me despite a few undercooked ideas.
