Splatoon 2 picks up what Splatoon on the Wii U founded, and builds upon it in a great way.
Kallie PlaggeJul 18, 2017
At first glance, Splatoon 2 seems very similar to the first game. But all the small changes, and even the bigger ones in single player and League Battles, make for a fresh take on the already unique shooter. If you played a lot of the original, the sequel has enough to keep you coming back, and if you're new to the game, it's a fantastic place to jump in.
Thomas CaswellJul 19, 2017
Splatoon 2 remains accessible to gamers of all ages whilst adding new features that will delight fans of the original game. The most unique shooter on the market.
Brittany VincentJul 21, 2017
Splatoon 2 is a measured dose of the same game you likely remember from the Wii U, a colorfully-inked tour-de-force of multiplayer action with a single-player afterthought. You'll want to clock hours and hours in-game for sure, but you'll be left scratching your head at some of the strange decisions Nintendo made this time around.

Splatoon 2 could’ve done more to differentiate itself from its predecessor, but ultimately what we’re left with is an upgrade over the original in almost every way. Sure, returning players might be underwhelmed with the familiarity, but anyone jumping into Splatoon for the first time will be blown away. Another Switch essential, especially for those multiplayer fans – let’s just hope Nintendo’s smartphone app works as elegantly…

Those hankering for a wildly robust and addictive competitive experience on Switch should absolutely take a dip into the neon-drenched waters of Splatoon 2. More so than Mario Kart 8, it offers a level of customisation, depth, and sheer fun that is rarely found anywhere else.
Brendan GraeberJul 25, 2017
There’s a lot to love in Nintendo’s second iteration of its quirky shooter, especially the way Splatoon 2 emphasizes splatting the ground just as much as it does inking your opponents.

Nintendo made a game that is pure fun, whether you’re being splatted or doing the splatting. The ability to play this game anywhere makes it even better.
Mike MinottiJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2 is just an easy game to like. It’s bright, cheery, and employs endless tricks in a constant quest to make you smile.
Kirstin SwalleyJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2 recaptures every moment of enjoyment of the original while finding room to add even more. Whether it’s the challenging single player or the revitalized multiplayer, Splatoon 2 does a phenomenal job at making itself more than a minor upgrade.
Pramath ParijatJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2 comes with all of the original game's strengths and weaknesses. It remains incredibly fun and addictive to play, and newcomers especially will fall in love with it. But if you're like me, you will mourn that Splatoon 2 failed to heed its predecessor's advice to stay fresh.
Sean EngemannJul 18, 2017
The original Splatoon drew a lot of criticism for being light on content when it first released. Nintendo made sure the sequel did not draw that same condemnation. After hours in the single-player campaign, the cooperative Salmon Run, and dozens of Turf Wars, I’m still looking forward to every free minute I have to tackle a solo mission with a different weapon or hop into a quick PvP match for a few more coins to buy new weapons and fill my wardrobe.
Mollie L PattersonJul 24, 2017
While Splatoon 2 wasn’t the go-all-out sequel I would have loved to have seen following the original Wii U game, simply getting it onto the Switch and giving it a selection of new content still makes a trip back to Inkopolis more than worthwhile. Previous fans should find enough new here to reignite their interest in the series, while new players will have a whole lot of fantastic gaming to sink their cephalopod teeth into.

Even with these problems Splatoon 2 is still a fun online game. The single player feels much more fleshed out, and Salmon Run is a blast. There are just two many weird setbacks to how the game works. Rotating only two maps per mode, keeping Salmon Run online locked behind events, and of course the online app.
Michael ChowJul 18, 2017
Granted, it is hard to compare gritty AAA first-person shooters with Splatoon 2 but it’s equally hard to argue against the aesthetically pleasing visuals, smooth framerate, polished gameplay, and pure fun of the game. Overall, Splatoon 2 is that refreshingly fun, summer title that looks and plays equally well.
Alice BellJul 18, 2017
Despite imperfections, Splatoon 2 improves on the original, and is a colourful, joyous addition to the Switch.
Chris CarterJul 18, 2017
Impressive effort with a few noticeable problems holding it back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.
Riley LittleJul 18, 2017
There’s a lot more in the tank with this sequel, but it really doesn’t do all that much new – and that’s okay. Splatoon 2 is instead a venture that perfects the formula first explored in the original Wii U title, making for an easy recommendation for newbies and seasoned squid aficionados alike on Nintendo Switch.
Ryan MeitzlerJul 24, 2017
Given that you’re greeted by the squid DJ duo Marina and Pearl each time you hope into the game — who are instantly lovable the moment you meet them — it’s easy to see why Splatoon made such a splash on the Wii U two years ago, and how Splatoon 2 might make a kid (or a squid) out of all of us on the Switch.
William MurphyJul 18, 2017
There are issues. The inability to leave an online queue while the match tries to find members can be annoying. You have to wait until the time runs down. Motion controls, while lauded by some, just don’t seem to work well in handheld mode. Thankfully, you can easily turn them on and off. Twin stick controls on the pro controller are brilliant though. And of course, the VOIP solution of a special smartphone app that’s coming out soon is a halfway measure at best.
Samuel HortiJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2’s formula no longer feels original, but it looks great, its controls are tight, and there’s enough variety to give you dozens of hours of multiplayer fun.
Caty McCarthyJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2 doesn't add much to shake up the splat-paint-everywhere formula, but I wonder if it needs to at this point. Splatoon 2 is a much stronger game at launch than its original ever was through its whole lifespan, and for that, is easily one of the best games one can own on the Switch.
Kyle HansonJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2’s list of changes and additions from the last game might make it feel a little light, but the actual experience of the game is stronger than it first appears.
Neal RonaghanJul 18, 2017
Under the right circumstances, Splatoon 2 is absolutely amazing. As long as you’re online rocking Turf Wars and Ranked Battles, those circumstances are way right.
Will CravensAug 07, 2017
Splatoon 2 is a blast. It brings back everything the original offered and ups the ante with Salmon Run. Unfortunately, you may be waiting a while before you can play this awesome new mode. Nintendo’s ability to deliver amazing content year after year can not be understated. Limiting the new mode behind a quirky schedule ultimately holds Splatoon 2 back from elevating the bar above its predecessor.
Chelsea StarkJul 18, 2017
What the first Splatoon did well is still built into the sequel’s barnacle-encrusted DNA, and now it’s on a system that you can stuff in your bag or play on the couch.
Brian SheaJul 18, 2017
Through focusing the best elements of the original game and adding meaningful new content, Splatoon 2 is a good follow-up to Nintendo's popular shooter. With a great competitive multiplayer suite, a fun take on the wave-based survival formula, and an imaginative single-player mode, Splatoon 2 is an excellent evolution.
Sam BishopJul 21, 2017
Splatoon was good when it landed the first time around, and so is this sequel, it's just that we would have liked to have seen the boat pushed out a little further. Regardless, what is here is ink-redibly fun, even the short Hero Mode/tutorial, and the multiplayer is just as gripping, spiced up in part by new maps and weapons thrown in for good measure.
Alex OlneyJul 18, 2017
Splatoon 2 is just about everything you could ask for from a sequel. It builds on everything the original set up and then some; almost every single major issue people had with the first game has been resolved, showing that Nintendo is genuinely listening and wants to deliver the absolute best experience possible.
Paul MurphyJul 18, 2017
If you had to describe Splatoon 2 in a single word, it would simply be “fun”. Pure, unadulterated fun that will last you a significant amount of time. With competent single player mode, addictive multilayer modes and the promise of regular content it’s another top quality – and essential – Switch release. Just make the Salmon Run more frequent, Nintendo.
GameCentralJul 18, 2017
It barely classifies as a sequel, but even if you’ve played the original this is still one of the best online shooters ever made.
Glen FoxJul 24, 2017
Splatoon 2 provides more of the addictive and inventive fun of the original, but doesn't quite do enough to earn the 2.
Stefan LJul 18, 2017
A fairly straightforward sequel to one of the Wii U’s best games, Splatoon 2’s unique take on the online multiplayer shooter is as fresh as ever on Switch. Nintendo still have one foot in the past with online functionality, stubbornly sticking to their (paint) guns when they should be learning from others, but these flaws are easily covered up once you get into a game.
Adam CookJul 18, 2017
There’s no question about it: Splatoon 2 is better than the first game. But it could have been one of the best games of the year. Ignoring the justified complaints aimed at the first game has cost Splatoon 2 a chance at being one of the best multiplayer experiences available anywhere. At first, you’ll love it, and while the gameplay will always satisfy, the wrappings will slowly gnaw at you, and playing a map five times on the trot will make you take a break. I love Splatoon 2 and will be playing it for a long time, but it’s not the home run it could have been.
Tomas BarryJul 18, 2017
Overall, Splatoon 2 is a brilliant and refreshing competitive multiplayer experience, both online and offline, which really fills a void in that regard for the system. Although the changes are fairly minor, it's hard to see the existing fan-base not leaping on-board in hordes, since more than anything else, the quirky franchise needs a more sustainable home platform and Nintendo Switch has proved itself to be just that.
Elia PalesJul 18, 2017
Those that played the original Splatoon will find the sequel feeling familiar. The intuitive mechanics are still as addictive as the first time around, but a larger number of maps and the addition of Salmon Run cements Splatoon 2 as an excellent standalone value.
Toby BergerAug 08, 2017
Splatoon 2 doesn't reinvent the wheel, but its refinements and tweaks are all for the better. Besides some niggling – though hopefully fixable – issues, this sequel is something Switch owners should well and truly check out. It's a blast, no matter which mode you choose to play.
Kosta AndreadisJul 24, 2017
Speaking of look, Splatoon 2 is a joy to take in. The fun and colourful presentation of the simple in-game hub that serves as the gateway to experience all the different modes on offer and spend virtual currency at clothing stores has a vibe that we can only describe as very Jet Set Radio.
