While a touch slower-paced than many of the Sonic the Hedgehog titles, Polyroll takes its time to let players warm up to it. With 36 levels and unique boss encounters, it is a fairly expansive experience. While it isn’t a killer app, for $9.99 USD, this bug might just scratch an itch for some old school platforming.
With the immense amounts of 2D platformers on the market right now, it's no wonder that Polyroll couldn't live up to what came before it. Even with this, however, the game is simply and utterly unremarkable, with a slow and unpleasant controlling character, problematic level design, and an unpolished feel that makes this title one that shouldn't be given the time of day.
Polyroll is a simple adventure that accurately reflects the price you pay for the game. To the title’s credit, all things are in good, working order, and I have no complaints about the controls or the game’s performance. Polyroll is, by and large, a spiritual sibling to the side-scrolling Sonic games we already know and love. If you’re looking for a Sonic experience, Polyroll will handily deliver that in a small, simple, and cost-effective package. Otherwise, this one doesn’t do much to stand out in a heavily saturated genre.
