The combat isn’t as feature complete as other modern Pokemon games, and the gen 1 pokedex might turn some people off, but this is a fantastic rendition of Red and Blue that I can easily recommend. Whether it’s your first time or fortieth, Pokemon Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee are a trip to Kanto you won’t want to miss.

For veteran players, just experiencing the original games one more time in a brand new way is enough to put a smile on your face and reawakening that inner child. Playing along with a newcomer or first-timer makes it even more inviting and enjoyable, reminding you why you fell with love with Pocket Monsters in the first place.

It’s a very strange feeling singing the praises of a modernization of a classic game over its source material. I’m the guy who complained that Final Fantasy Origins went too far by showing the equipment strength values. Even an old guy like me who was the target age demographic when Pokémon made its debut can admit that Let’s Go does an exemplary job of implementing modern improvements while still maintaining its strong sense of nostalgia.

The Pokemon Go catching system is a more relaxing way to fill out the Pokedex and grind for experience, and I never felt like I was missing out on battles because of it. Kanto is littered with charismatic trainers ready to fight. Some irritating UI design and issues with its motion controls add up to be a minor annoyance, but the addicting capture cycle and great challenges in the post-game keep me coming back to play.

Despite these concessions, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee are delightful reimaginings of the series' origins and a deep RPG in their own right. It makes a lot of smart improvements on the original Red, Blue and Yellow while holding on to what made them so special in the first place. Fans of the series might be let down by the lack of features they've come to expect, but Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee take the Pokemon formula in some exciting new directions.

My nostalgia for this series is strong and could've destroyed the fun I had with Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, but instead galvanised it. This is the classic original generation of Pokémon, but it looks better, plays better, and feels incredibly refreshing. Pokémon on Nintendo Switch isn't just a Pokémon GO companion piece, it's a fantastic RPG in its own right, and with any luck, will spawn its own series of Pokémon games for the future. A great Pokémon game for veterans and newcomers. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a Pokédex to complete.

Pokemon Let’s GO Pikachu and Eevee won’t satisfy everyone. They aren’t core games in the sense people are used to. But they shouldn’t be totally disregarded as cash grabs either. It’s a relaxing approach to Pokemon, one you can tailor to your own needs and enjoy, whatever your playstyle might be. There’s a lot on offer here, and behind the Pokemon GO add-ins, there are enough recognizable Pokemon mechanics to please newcomers and long-time fans.
Jason FaulknerNov 24, 2018
Pokemon Let’s Go is best approached exactly like Nintendo described it. It’s an experimental side game and in no way a substitute for a main series title. Luckily, we should get a chance to experience a new core title for the Switch next year. As it stands, Pokemon Let’s Go is a decent morsel which will help pass the time until then.

Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! are an amazing glimpse into what a console version of the “core” Pokemon games will look like. It does such a good job of revitalizing an old game that I almost have to wonder if the entire point is to channel the wave of Pokemon Go players into the rest of the franchise.
William SchwartzNov 18, 2018
While this methodology may be OK for a mobile game because the target audience is much wider, those who choose to go a little deeper into gaming and buy a console dedicated for it expect a little bit more. Let’s Go is surprisingly shallow when compared to just about any Pokemon game, despite an appealing presentation that returns players to a popular location.
Kirstin SwalleyNov 19, 2018
It’s the perfect title for longtime fans who want a relaxed experience, anyone who wants to try a Pokémon title for the first time or is just looking for something on the easier side to try with a younger relative. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee! might not be a look at what to entirely expect for Pokémon’s future on console, but does a wonderful job as a first step moving forward from traditional handhelds.
Nadia OxfordNov 15, 2018
Pokemon Let's Go is engineered to let youngsters play along with their parents, but there's a lot here for veterans to enjoy, too. It's relentlessly cute and colorful, and while the challenge level won't blister your skin, the new Coach Trainers will keep you hopping. We're still not sure about the Go-style method of catching wild Pokemon, but Pokemon Let's Go's ability to link-up to Niantic's app offers a quick and easy way to fill out your PokeDex.
Ryan CraddockNov 13, 2018
Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! are beautiful reimaginings of a video game classic, updating a 20-year-old game in ways which make it infinitely more accessible and user-friendly for a modern audience, while keeping the magic first discovered all those years ago. On the downside, the newly-introduced motion control mechanic is fun but flawed.
Chris CarterNov 13, 2018
I can't believe it took Game Freak over 20 years to give us an RPG-oriented console Pokémon game, but with the ever-changing mobile landscape and the success of the Switch, the opportunity finally presented itself. No, Let's Go is not the mainline entry that EV/IV min-maxers hoped for, but that's still on the way. If you happen to miss this return to Kanto, that's perfectly fine, but I was mostly delighted to go back.
PramathNov 21, 2018
Gorgeous graphics, great soundtrack, some drastic changes to the series formula, such as the removal of random encounters and wild Pokemon battles; charming and cute as all heck, and liberated from the overwrought, railroaded outings of recent franchise entries; extremely breezy, yet compelling and addictive. Pokemon weaponizes nostalgia and embraces change in one potent package that delivers the series’ best outing in years.
James GalizioNov 27, 2018
Pokemon Let's Go might not be what I wanted next from the series, but I can't say I was left disappointed with it. Gamefreak's latest adventure manages to cut a lot of the franchise's fat while injecting something new into the formula. While I definitely don't want to see everything it changes brought over to Generation VIII, Let's Go acts as a refreshing change of pace for bother newcomers and longtime fans of the series.
Sam LoveridgeNov 13, 2018
Pokemon Let's Go is a superb surprise, a fully-fledged Pokemon RPG with interactivity that brings the series to life in a way that's never been done before.
Alex SeedhouseNov 13, 2018
With more than 800 Pokémon scurrying around in tall grass and hundreds of moves to consider in battle, it’s easy to forget how daunting the Pokémon series can be for newcomers. That makes Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee! the perfect adventure for those that want to explore the Kanto region for the first time, resulting in a game that’s for everyone – whatever your age.
Justin SharpDec 31, 2018
Overall, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee achieve what they set out to in the beginning. They bring series’ veterans back into the fold while also making it easy for newcomers to see what the ‘core’ RPG games have been about all these years. The catching mechanic turned out to be a welcome change and it turns out I actually want more to change with the formula as a result. Here’s to more Pokémon in 2019 and hopefully there’s some fresh new ideas in store.
Emma SchaeferNov 13, 2018
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! may be a remake of the oldest Pokémon games in the series, but it shakes up the standard Pokémon formula more than any of the main games since. With a catching system reminiscent of Pokémon Go, an adorable Eevee or Pikachu partner, multiplayer, and gorgeous graphics, the Let’s Go games have something to offer for every Pokémon fan, though the game’s changes may be just different enough to throw off the nostalgia for returning players.
GameCentralNov 13, 2018
We got a real nostalgic kick out of playing through it and rather than the dumbed down travesty we were fearing it seems ideal for those that have enjoyed Pokémon GO but never got into the console games. It may not be an entirely new game but the joys of catching, battling, and trading pokémon feel just as fun and engrossing now as they ever have.
Emily SowdenNov 13, 2018
Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee! is a simple game with a deep combat system which everyone can enjoy.

Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee! and Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! are out now for Nintendo Switch. Did you pick this game up on release? Did you go with Eevee or Pikachu? Is this your first time in Kanto, if so how are you finding it? Let us know in the comments, or on Twitter, and check back for more coverage of Nintendo games and other Japanese titles.

It did, however, feel childishly simple due to some tweaks such as the default experience share and we disliked how the Pokéball Plus accessory forced Pokédex completion behind a paywall. We do hope though that Game Freak can go back to the drawing board with some of these criticisms in mind as we would love to revisit other regions such as Hoen and Jhoto treated with the same level of interactivity and visual polish.
Chris WhiteNov 13, 2018
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! does a great job of allowing players to enjoy what made the series so good as well as incorporating the best features from Pokémon Go and presenting the same amazing adventure veterans have enjoyed in the RPG. This may not be the brand new adventure we’re all waiting for, but it’s a nice stopgap for those wanting to scratch that itch.
Jake DurasamyNov 13, 2018
Pokémon: Let’s Go’s nostalgic charm and interactive gameplay will have both newcomers and returning trainers hooked as they explore the beloved Kanto region. Let’s Go mashes together these two different styles of Pokémon game into one streamlined format, and despite some slight annoyances, these remakes provide an intimate take on the classic Pokémon journey, especially when played with the Poké Ball Plus accessory.
Joshua (Shnook)Aug 27, 2019
Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee holds true to the original Pokémon games but suffers from changes that would turn off hardcore Pokémon fans.
Zubi KhanNov 15, 2018
Pokémon Let’s Go, Eevee is the genesis of a new beginning for the Pokémon series, giving players of both the traditional handheld games and newcomers alike, or fans of Niantic’s Pokémon Go, the best of both worlds.
Aric SweenyNov 13, 2018
With all this said, hidden behind these massive control issues is a great game. Battling other trainers, gym leaders, and eventually the elite 4 is more fun than ever, as is exploring the vast, weird Kanto region. Game Freak clearly paid great attention to detail when designing the title, and it shows. The Pokemon die-hards, especially those infatuated with generation one, will find a lot to love in Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee.
Shannon GrixtiNov 14, 2018
Pokemon Let's GO ushers in a brand new era for the Pokemon brand and I couldn't think of a better way for the core franchise to makes its debut on the Nintendo Switch. The game's mechanics perfectly rides the wave of success of the Pokemon GO phenomenon. Some core fans will be disappointed and that's completely fine, but the direction of Let's GO Pokemon is clear and it succeeds in its mission to provide a simple, yet addictive Pokemon game that can be enjoyable for all gamers.
Baz MacdonaldNov 22, 2018
Pokémon: Let’s Go is a fun, light nostalgia trip for long time players, and an easy on-ramp into the Pokémon console games for new players. Its greatest feat is presenting a stunning graphical style and approach which wonderfully blends players desire for 3D Pokémon games with the core tenets of the franchise – setting high expectations for the Generation Eight debut on the Switch next year.

Alice WilczynskiNov 16, 2018
