Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 PLUS is the definitive Pac-Man experience. It’s a load of fun for fast games on the go, with especially the single-player adventure mode giving you very little time to reach its goals. However, it’s the two-player mode where the game really shines, jumping out of its own comfort zone and hitting you with elements you’d never expect in a Pac-Man game.
Pac-Man: Championship Edition 2 creates an exciting dynamic where ghosts are still dangerous, but the overall game is more forgiving than the original--and it’s more entertaining as a result. Arcade ports tend to be games we play in short bursts--mostly for the nostalgia factor. Pac-Man: Championship Edition 2 certainly relies on that nostalgia to a point, but it handles the classic game in a way that plays with expectations to surprise you. It’s the same game enhanced in the right directions to be make an old concept fun, innovative, and challenging all over again.
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is a perfect fit with the Nintendo Switch. It’s easy to pick up and impossible to put down – especially when trying to hit that target score. With plenty of variety and levels to play through, there’s quite a lot to get stuck into. However, if you are anything like me, you will probably spend days alone fine-tuning your run, just trying to get that S rank on the first map.
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is everything that fans of the classic arcade game could want out of a legacy sequel, focusing on delivering a pure, high-speed realization of the concept that was introduced way back in 1980. Between the single player and multiplayer modes, there’s enough content here for hours of play, and it’s all endlessly replayable.
The core of Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is good, especially with the Score Attack mode and the novel new local two-player mode. Unfortunately, the botched offline score uploading, minor technical issues, and disappointing Adventure mode drag the entire experience down. If you have friends locally to play the two-player mode or friends online to score chase with, this is a fine game, at least as long you’re always near WiFi when you get high scores.
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus brings the challenging Pac-Man game to the Switch with a brand new, exclusive co-op mode. The original Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 mode features all the content from the original release in 2016. It would have been nice if the developers toned down the difficulty of the Adventure mode, Score Attack still is pretty fun to play.
The core gameplay is instantly and effortlessly entertaining, with lots of clever new ideas. Great presentation and music, with plenty of content for the price. Co-op mode is fun. The new abilities don’t gel together quite as well as the first game and the ghost trains can be hugely frustrating. Difficulty spike can impact longevity.
It's always been tough getting gaming icons of the past to become modern and engaging to the 21st century gamer, but with Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus Bandai Namco has cranked the speed up to 100 miles an hour, turned up the music, and really upped the ante, producing a fast and furious version of Pac-Man that's not only ideal for quick bursts but is suited incredibly well to the Switch.
PAC-MAN Championship Edition 2 PLUS could have been the definitive version of an already almost perfect game. The damming frame-rate drops are bad enough to affect the game's playability and oftentimes lead to unfair losses. In spite of the technical shortcomings, though, those who manage to adapt or compensate for this unyieldingly flaw will still find that this is a wonderful version of an already beloved arcade classic.
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus for the Nintendo Switch is a port that just makes sense on a console that encourages local multiplayer. Aside from a few snags such as inconsistent framerates and luke-warm boss encounters, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus is a good game and worthy of the Pac-Man legacy.
