Modern Combat Blackout is a decent step forward for the series on mobile, but in the presence of DOOM, Wolfenstein II, Paladins and even Payday 2, it simply doesn’t stack up. There’s plenty to appreciate here – the integration of single-player missions, Spec Ops challenges and multiplayer matches into one hub is a really great feature, but the mediocre gameplay and mobile-centric quality levels really water those positives down.

It makes up for its underwhelming visuals, framerate, and campaign mode with a decent multiplayer and great controls. It gives me hope for future Gameloft endeavors on the console, as well as alerting Activision that you can make CoD-like shooters work on the Switch. You’re losing the race, guys.

Visually, Modern Combat Blackout won’t impress, nor will it offend. It is clear the game was originally developed for mobile platforms and the game doesn’t do much to take advantage of the Switch’s more powerful hardware. Performance-wise, the game is functional. There are some moments of slowdown during busy areas, but they are just slight hiccups and the game quickly recovers from the misstep.
