Rather than make a direct sequel to their bite-sized 2D action game Mighty Gunvolt from 2014, Inti Creates has made the next installment in the Mighty Gunvolt series a brand new full-sized game that features characters from multiple universes with Gunvolt (Azure Striker Gunvolt) and Beck (Mighty No. 9) taking the stage once again, but in a much deeper and more expansive world that differs greatly from the original in many ways.

After the exceedingly sub-standard Mighty No. 9, you can understand feeling a bit uneasy playing a game using the same character in the same universe. But I have to say that I was quite surprised by how much I enjoyed playing through Mighty Gunvolt Burst. It’s not the longest game in the world, sure, but it’s a fun one. The controls feel really tight, platforming, shooting, it feels good, it feels as if it was a Mega Man game, and that’s the biggest compliment I can give it.
I can see myself picking up Mighty Gunvolt Burst every now and then, especially since it's so easy to do on the Switch. If Inti Creates goes the way of DLC or a full sequel where the universes are flipped, I'm already in. They clearly still have it while Capcom and Comcept struggle to get a firm hold on the genre.
Mighty Gunvolt Burst is something that you’ll want to show your friends who quit playing games in the 90’s or youngsters who haven’t experienced a true retro style game. In a generation that pushes hardware to limits, Inti Creates continues to deliver these five – six hour long experiences that push our 2D action platforming skills to the test.
