Mega Man 11 is a good action game that you can easily identify with, but it's far too uneven and bumpy to hold up against some of the best installments in the venerable franchise. At its best, it's a terrific retro romp with exciting boss encounters and unique gimmicks. At its worst, it's a frustrating experience whose too-long levels toss out infuriating obstacles to progress at the worst times.
The initial thrill is sizable, but once it tapers off, Mega Man 11 reveals itself to just be a good game, not a great one. There’s no shame in that; I’m just grateful the blue bomber is back. I’d hoped for something that better balanced the old-school with innovation after all this time, but that isn’t something the series has generally been known for. The familiarity is comforting in many ways, so for those with nostalgic interest, I recommend the physical amiibo edition with some cool extras.
Longtime Mega Man enthusiasts may scoff at the idea of expanded difficulty options, but their inclusion doesn’t mean the game isn’t still aimed directly at the hardcore fans. Mega Man 11 delivers an old-school Mega Man experience with some newer graphics and gameplay features to keep things feeling fresh, and while it falls just shy of its predecessors in some regards, it should still please fans and newcomers alike.
