Manticore - Galaxy on Fire is a simple but very satisfying romp through 3D space. For those like me who were waiting eagerly for this genre to arrive on Switch, Manticore makes a great premiere showing. While its origins on smart phones show through in spots, it still holds up remarkably well on console. Manticore is an easy pick for fans of the genre, and a great premier space shooter on Switch.
Manticore: Galaxy on Fire is an enjoyable third-person space combat game set in a well thought out universe, pitting you as the newest member of a mercenary team investigating a horrifying event. With controls reminiscent of Battlefront 2 and minor customization options, this feels like a good introduction to the genre for younger gamers who aren’t interested in the online competitive nature of Star Wars just yet.
Manticore: Galaxy on Fire isn’t a bad game, but it exists in a genre that hasn’t yet found its feet. When you can fight and fly it’s incredible and works well on both the big and small screen of the Switch. While other genres have spent the past decades perfecting and refining themselves, flight simulators, to me at least, are still experimenting. Some try and focus on plot, or exploration, or combat but none yet have not managed to balance all these elements.
