Lost Sphear is a mixed bag that will appeal to some RPG fans more than others. Combat is challenging and fun, but the story feels lacking and derivative for much of the game.

There is a clear graphical step up in both the characters and the world that has been created for Lost Sphear, as the developer continues to learn how to squeeze more out of the Unity engine. But, another area where the game disappoints is the soundtrack that has been penned by composer Tomoki Miyoshi, which, compared to his work on I Am Setsuna, isn’t particularly memorable aside from a handful of tracks.

Lost Sphear has some good ideas and mechanics working together when it comes to battle, but everything else falls short and feels dull. The reused dungeons, backtracking, and slow-paced story don’t give me much to fight for, even if the end does come together in an interesting way. Sadly, the tedious grind through a milquetoast adventure is sour for far too long before coming together.

However, that isn't to say that Lost Sphear isn't fun to play. The numerous gameplay features like vulcosuits, spritnite, and artifacts come together to create an enjoyable and complex turn-based system that promotes strategy. Here's hoping that Tokyo RPG Factory's next project takes that gameplay design and applies it to a heartfelt story that doesn't feel like it was assembled on a conveyor belt.

There’s little in Lost Sphear that you haven’t seen before in JRPGs, but that doesn’t mean it’s a title to be dismissed out of hand. If you can look past the clichés, Lost Sphear presents an engaging world, deep battle system, and plenty of replayability which will likely delight many an RPG fan. Tokyo RPG Factory has proven with this release that it’s capable of learning from past mistakes, and though Lost Sphear still might not be the game to surpass Chrono Trigger, it proves itself to be worthy of that legacy.

Words cannot express the love I have for Lost Sphear. It’s such a great game to play on the Nintendo Switch. Although it did have a few shortcomings, like the fact that enemy encounters are secluded to enclosed areas, and Vulcosuits must be used quite sparingly, I couldn’t seem to put it down. Perhaps it was the awesome combat system and excellent story that kept me playing, either way, I’m glad I had the opportunity to immerse myself in it.

If you had asked me just two weeks ago to name the biggest storytelling sin a game could commit, I would have told you it was making players ask questions without giving them a reason to care about the answers. Ask me today and I’ll tell you something different. Lost Sphear buried me under convoluted logic and explanations, lore and jargon, only to cast it aside with a shrug whenever the details were inconvenient to the action. It answered my questions, but in ways so fundamentally disconnected and absurd that I regretted even caring in the first place.

Ever wish you could bring a memory back to life? Tokyo RPG Factory has transplanted the essence of Chrono Trigger and other classic SNES JRPGs into a beautiful modern engine to revivify the Active Time Battle system for a new generation of players in the form of Lost Sphear.

When more exciting retro-styled throwbacks like Project Octopath Traveler are on the horizon, Tokyo RPG Factory really need to take a look at what they’re going to do with their next game to make it stand out from the crowd. It’s not that Lost Sphear is a bad game, but it isn’t especially good either.

As mentioned, Lost Sphear utilises the ATB battle system and is very similar to that of I Am Setsuna. One standout feature though is that the actual positioning of the characters in the battle can greatly affect how successfully they fight. With each character comes a different style of combat, as some are close range, others ranged, and even some with huge areas of effect. Take for example Van - his ranged attack will pass through multiple opponents so, if lined up correctly before attacking, he can unleash his barrage on a whole line of baddies maximising damage across your foes.
