Death Road to Canada is a Randomly Generated Road Trip Action-RPG. You have to manage a car full of jerks as they explore cities, find weird people, and face up to 500 zombies at once. Everything's randomized: locations, events, survivor personalities. There's a different story every time you play.

Repetition is more of a danger to this game than anything else, as it’s easy to grow weary of what it offers. Still, playing the game in bite-size chunks is a blast, and I think I’ll be traveling down the Death Road to Canada for a while whenever I need a break from other games. A little zombie bashing once in a while could do me some good.

In Death Road to Canada’s case, death is what happens. You’ll be so busy plotting out who does what, what supplies you need, who goes where, and when to stop, that a sudden random encounter can throw off all your best-laid plans. In this way, DRtC is frustrating at times like all roguelikes, but the fact that the game never feels the same twice is enough to keep you going.

Death Road To Canada allows fans of the zombie genre to live out their ultimate survival fantasies again and again. Technically, there are a limitless amount of scenarios to experience thanks to the compact yet well designed gameplay, but after a while the patterns and outcomes may become a little too predictable for the average player. If you do happen to be a long-time enthusiast of zombies, this may be worth sinking your teeth into.

The wacky narrative escapades in Death Road to Canada are where it excels, but it falls apart when you actually want to progress. The brutal, random nature too often made me feel like I had little agency in my quest, which made it hard to really care about ever making it to Canada reliably. The reward for my death road was the unusual tales I created along the way, not the gameplay.

Death Road to Canada is a game that's fun in small bursts, especially for rogue-like fans. While its gameplay loops start to age after a while, its collection of modes, character creation tool, and naughty, knowing sense of humor keep things interesting.

So if you enjoy games like The Binding of Isaac (and the dark humour that comes with it) or FTL we've got no qualms about recommending this game to you. We've personally put quite a lot of hours into both of those games, and we'll most likely sink just as many into Death Road to Canada.

Death Road to Canada is a special adventure with a lot to offer. I’ve lost count of just how many times I’ve tried to journey to Canada but I’m still running into a ton of new event scenes and making characters is a blast. Being able to unlock new perks and traits make me even more willing to go back and create more characters to run into during my next trip. If you don’t mind difficult games with a lot of surprise elements to them, I’d strongly suggest picking up Death Road to Canada.

Death Road to Canada attempts to offset the normally dark themes of the zombie genre with zany characters, a charming pixel art style, and poppy music, but the lack of depth to its combat and randomly generated content will quickly leave you feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. There is some fun to be had here for sure, which is definitely best experienced with friends, but that doesn't make up for its issues and overall lacklustre action.
