There are definitely lessons woven into Cinders, but they’re done subtly. You come away from it feeling oddly motivated to think about the decisions ahead of you. It’s well made in terms of its structure and is a refreshing take on an old story.
Cinders spends most of its time rehashing a story I have seen and heard many times over, and the time it does spend trying to do something different — either through the story or by offering the player some narrative freedom — it fails to stick the landing and actually make any meaningful changes. I went into the game hoping for a risque rendition of an old fairy tale, and what I got was a milquetoast story that never felt truly distinctive.
Overall, Cinders is a brilliant retelling of a classic tale, and a fine example of how visual novels should be done. Its writing is clever, it has plenty of meaningful choices and narratives branches to follow, and it looks wonderful to boot. If you're not a visual novel fan, this may not be the game to tempt you over. But if you're in the mood for a smart twist on an old tale, you really must check it out.
