The game has a surprisingly enjoyable soundtrack, too. The spritework is also quite good but everything is way too small. As a result, I recommend playing Aqua Kitty UDX on your TV. There’s also a two-player co-op option, which is nice. In the end, I enjoyed Dreadnought Mode but found Normal/Arcade Mode to be uninspiring. If you need an underwater bullet-hell shooter, Aqua Kitty UDX should scratch that itch.
Aqua Kitty UDX does one thing really well and it sticks with it from beginning to end. The upbeat music and jolly visuals go hand in hand with that sentiment as while they’re a pleasure to behold at first, you’ll slowly start to feel like you’ve seen it all. Perhaps it’s a good thing the game ends so soon as any longer and this Kitty might have just fallen to the bottom of the ocean. It’s by no means an unenjoyable game – quite the opposite in fact – but there are just other games out there that do more interesting things with the genre.
As a cute callback to classic arcade shooters, Aqua Kitty UDX has it moments, especially with its intense and addictive Dreadnought mode. But unless you are someone who adores the genre and has a knack for high scores, then there really isnât much depth to keep your eyes glued for long.
