Outside of the main runs, 20XX also features co-op and weekly leaderboard challenges in runs built from randomly generated level seeds. These should serve as a nice distraction for most, and playing a Mega Man style game in co-op feels unique. These will probably be the aspects of 20XX I return to the most, though even they may eventually wear out their welcome.

Procedural generation is sometimes lambasted as a cheap alternative to intricate level design, and 20XX doesn't always do enough to break that stereotype. But despite its inconsistent level make-ups and underwhelming boss designs, 20XX is still an engrossing side-scroller that perfects the feeling of navigating dangerous, pitfall and enemy-filled stages.

20XX offers a quick dose of Mega Man inspired gameplay that doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. The controls were clearly refined to be authentic and tight. What the game does lack, however, is content to come back to after mastering the quick 20XX runs. This doesn’t mean that 20XX is worth skipping out on, though. This endless retro shooter is worth checking out, especially if you love Mega Man X or just solid platforming in general.

20XX is an action game that harkens back to the glory days of retro platforming. Its strong Mega Man influence is countered by its own flavor of procedurally generated levels, keeping things fresh at first, though there is some repetition after awhile. With interesting bosses and a great co-op mode, platforming fans should find something to enjoy here.

20XX conjures a lot of feelings from yesteryear, bringing back the shoot-em-up platformers of old while adding new and interesting wrinkles to the formula. However, some of those wrinkles hinder the goal of creating a “classic” feel more than they foster it, as a lot of what made those older games great just cannot be found in a roguelike environment.

Playing 20XX has an addictive rhythm to everything. You dive into the level, find loot like upgrades and currency bolts, kill bosses to take their weapons, and keep pushing until you die. After dying we’d often suffer from that 'just one more run' itch that’s so common in roguelikes and the formula fits an action platformer like 20XX perfectly.

20XX is a capable roguelike version of Mega Man X. If you're a fan of 2D action games then it's definitely worth checking out as long as you don't expect it to be a revolutionary take on either genre.

The visuals are cute, the sound effects and music decent, and the world and enemy designs are certainly very evocative of the games they're inspired by, but a lot of people are going to struggle with the sternness of the challenge. 20XX is a decent roguelite and a fitting homage to Mega Man X, but it's not quite a classic in its own right.

Even with small bumps here and there, 20XX still holds up as a fantastic title that is a true sequel to the Mega Man X series. Sure, the roguelike elements might be off putting to some, but there are many reasons to embrace them and really lose yourself. From the amazing soundtrack and gameplay, to finding a new combo of items to use in order to cut some time off your run, 20XX is a brilliant game that will offer countless hours of fun.

Despite how hard this game is, that isn’t a mark against it – very much the opposite in fact. Megaman games have always been incredibly challenging and anything that tries to give the same feel as those needs to be just as difficult. 20XX does an incredible job of balancing this given its roguelike nature. It’s a worthy successor to any of the old games, it is the game that Megaman fans have been waiting for, and quite simply it does what it does spectacularly.

If you decide to pick up 20XX—you’re going to have a bad time. You’re going to die, you’re going to be frustrated, maybe even throw your controller in a fit of rage. If you’re anything like me, you will find small instances of inspiration and confidence to pick up your pad once again and jump back into the fray. And, I couldn’t recommend it more for that.
