Ok, I bit. Now that the original **The Last of Us** was remade with current gen graphics I finally decided to play this modern classic.

Please note that my review is based on my personal experience with this game - and exclusively this version of the game. I am well aware that the sole existence of this game is caked in a medium-sized controversy questioning it's purpose to be solely monetary. I can't personally speak on whether this game is a good remake or whether considering it's context as arguably a "lazy remake" it's worth 70€. It might not be. After all I could have Playstation Plus'd a slightly inferior version for free. But to put it a bit cryptic and in reference to the game in front of us - I kinda Joel'ed out in the end and went with it anyway. Not sure, if people will get what I'm trying to say here. It made sense in my head.

Anyway, do you like zombie movies? If yes, well that's what you get. Flesh-eating, brain dead, animalistic zombies. Initially it was a bit disappointing, if I'm honest. The Last of Us does little to switch the zombie lore up. There's spores causing infections. There's that. The clickers and bloaters are ominous and fill the screen with dread everytime they jumpscare you with their trypophobia inducing designs. But let's be honest, it's only that much different from a Romero movie or the Walking Dead. But what The Last of Us lacks in it's predictable setting, it perfectly makes up for in terms of characters and themes. I was initially a bit on the fence with it, but the closer you drag yourself towards the end of the story, the neater it gets wrapped up in it's thematic and kinda philosophical implications that makes all the close calls worth it.

Story-wise we follow Joel - a grieving father who lost his daughter the day the zombie apocalypse broke out and has since led a life of cruelty and (if we may even still call it that?) crime to ensure his survival in the new landscape. Some chapters in he is joined by Ellie. A 14-year old, who's existence implies the potential of a cure of the infections as a zombie bite failed to turn her and got subdued in her body. The year-long journey the two undertake in the game is motivated by having Ellie become a source of research for developing a vaccine, but as you may have noticed the path is riddled with fallbacks. If there was ever a game where the term "This is why we can't have nice things" felt right at home, it's this (well story-wise, gameplay-wise it's Crash Bandicoot 4). The world has turned violent and cruel: Some people became clickers and bloaters, others cold-hearted survivalists and killers.

Story is very much an integral part to the gameplay and the game makes sure the graphics back it up in the most immersive way. While one may argue that video games are still some steps away from achieving photorealism, The Last of Us Part 1 is perhaps as close as we may get in 2022 (Well, there was also Horizon Forbidden West).

The immersion doesn't just stop at pretty colors and detailed surfaces. TLOU probably more than any game before it tries to make you experience what the main characters are experiencing. Ever wanted to hang from the cieling upside down shooting at approaching zombies? Or slowly avoid obstacles with a giant hole in your stomach as conscienceness is slowly leaving your body? Probably not, but in TLOU you will.

Surprisingly I haven't just found myself immersed in the story, but also in the first person shooter segments. TLOU is not your typical ego shooter game. Sometimes combat is better avoided, sometimes a fight or flight response is all you have. The sheer weight of the scenarios you will find yourself pushed into will make your satisfaction shoot through the roof everytime you headshot a clicker, stealth choke a guy to death or just barricade a door shut so a bloater can't come after you.

Anyway, The Last of Us Part I may in fact not be the last of The Last of Us games I played and might very well just be a part I for me. Game was a blast, fun puzzles and battles, I saw monkeys, petted a giraffe, shot some guy's nuts off... Joel still hasn't sang and Ellie can't swim for sh\*t, but we'll make up for it in part II. Can't wait to see what Joel and Ellie are up to in part II. Together. As the dream team. It's bound to be great.
