Diving into MLB The Show 23 on Xbox Series S through GamePass, the experience felt like a bit of a mixed bag, challenging the traditional notions of what a sports simulation game should deliver.

Let's address the positives. The game's visuals on the Xbox Series S are undoubtedly impressive. The details in player models, stadiums, and the overall presentation are praiseworthy. The power of the console brings the baseball experience to life, capturing the essence of the sport with stunning graphics.

GamePass, known for its variety, allows players to explore MLB The Show 23 without an additional financial commitment. This accessibility is a definite plus, especially for those who might not be die-hard baseball fans but are looking for a diverse gaming experience.

However, the devil creeps in when we consider the gameplay mechanics. While the visuals are top-notch, the core gameplay feels somewhat stagnant. The improvements from previous iterations are incremental, and for a sports title that aims for an annual release, one might expect more innovation. The Xbox Series S, though capable, doesn't seem to push the gameplay boundaries as much as one might hope.

The depth of the career and franchise modes, while comprehensive, might be overwhelming for more casual players. The learning curve feels steeper than necessary, potentially alienating those who are not well-versed in the intricacies of baseball strategy.

Furthermore, the reliance on microtransactions, a common trend in modern sports games, is quite noticeable. It often feels like progress is intentionally slowed down to encourage in-game purchases, creating a less-than-optimal experience for players who prefer to earn their achievements through skill and dedication.

While GamePass offers accessibility, it does bring into question the long-term commitment of players. Will MLB The Show 23 hold the attention of GamePass subscribers, or will it be a temporary diversion in a library of diverse offerings?

In the end, MLB The Show 23 on Xbox Series S via GamePass raises questions about the annual sports game model, the balance between accessibility and depth, and the impact of microtransactions on the overall gaming experience. It's a visually stunning experience with some gameplay hesitations, making it a title that might need a bit more than a casual swing for the fences to truly hit a home run.
