Each death taught me a new lesson. There’s a ton of customization and crafting to be done, and the areas that can be explored are very well made. The best part of this is that there is no single right way to play as you can tackle the game’s happenings in any way you want. Anyone who likes crafting, survival and possibly being eaten by cannibals (or eating the cannibals) should definitely give this game a whirl.

Any issues I had with The Forest didn’t stop it from becoming the definitive survival experience on console in my eyes, however. If you’re yet to try the game on PC, its PS4 version is a surprisingly sleek and arguably just as rewarding time-sinker that won’t even make you feel bad for being a terrible parent. Sorry, Timmy, I am one with the trees now.

In a team of up to eight players, you can experience the nightmares inside The Forest with the security of others watching your back. Multiplayer may be enjoyable but, with a large squad on your side, fear of being hunted and alone is diminished, therefore affecting atmosphere and tension which is so prominent and successful in the main game.

All told, The Forest is a decent survival title for PlayStation 4, and there's so much to see and do. The excellent AI will leave you genuinely terrified while playing alone in the dark, and you'll be even more grateful when an online buddy comes along to help you out. This is one of the best survival experiences on the PS4 right now, and with the horror edge, it really does stand out. If you're up for a challenge, this is one forest worth exploring further.

Keeping its own game in the oven was a risk for Endnight but it’s one that has ultimately paid off. While inherently grindy and familiar in premise, The Forest boasts a much higher level of polish than its competitors, along with crafting systems and survival mechanics that are more intuitive and approachable. It may not mark a new evolution in the world of survival sandbox but it is certainly one the most refined frontrunners.

All things considered, getting acquainted with The Forest proved to be rather enjoyable at times thanks to some exciting ideas, but it didn't fully click with us in the long-run. This horror-tinged survival adventure simply lacks the content needed to hold our interest over an extended period of time, but if you find some decent players to join up with, new possibilities open up and it's worth closer consideration.

Then there’s the fact that if you look past the sheer impressiveness of its innovative design, The Forest reveals itself to be a supremely polished effort, too. Not in the least afflicted by the raft of glitches, game-breaking bugs or poor performance that have previously blighted the likes of Ark: Survival Evolved, The Forest is quite simply one of the best put together and outright terrifying games you’ll play on your PS4 this year.
