Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is flawed, but succeeds at providing a thrilling MMO-esque experience offline. Its biggest failings involve bringing in the worst of that genre to an offline experience with a plethora of busy work that needlessly pads out the runtime and doesn’t serve a greater purpose. Everything involving the hub world would benefit from heavy streamlining, while the core third-person shooting action is on-point and does everything it should do to thrill players.
I enjoyed most of my time with Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet but I felt that it could have been a better experience with improved dungeon design and controls. Thankfully, this is a great new direction for the SAO series to be headed. Hopefully, the next video game installment will continue the trajectory of Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet and make this series the best it can be for fans.
Fatal Bullet also features online PvP elements, but the less said about those the better—do not purchase this game for its online functionality. The modes feel tacked on, matchmaking takes times, and all of the positive energy generated by the game’s combat system in PvE translates very poorly into PvP. Not being able to aim very well against other players sucks, and the matches devolve into spray and pray mentalities quickly.
