STEINS;GATE ELITE is fully remastered with animated scenes from the anime, creating a perfectly new, immersive experience. The game follows a rag-tag band of tech-savvy young students who discover the means of changing the past via e-mail using a modified microwave. Their experiments in pushing the boundaries of time begin to spiral out of control as they become entangled in a conspiracy surrounding SERN, the organization behind the Large Hadron Collider, and John Titor, who claims to be from a dystopian future.

Those minor problems aside, Steins;Gate Elite is definitely the best way to get into this property. It has all the charm of the anime, all the narrative excellence of the original, and a refinement that hasn’t existed in either up until this point. For new fans or veterans alike, Steins;Gate Elite is well worth the pick-up, and should represent a potential starting point for future visual novels looking to make a similar impact.

This bodes doubly true when it’s the remake of one of my favorite games of all time. While I have some contention in regards to the changes made to the main campaign, the additional stories are well worth the cost of admission by itself for fans, and even though I hesitate to call “Elite” the definitive way to experience the beauty of Steins;Gate, there is simply no bad way to experience such an exceptional story.

While Steins;Gate Elite certainly delivers a storyline that’s unconventional and interesting once you get through the first couple of chapters, new players may be turned off early on due to the monotonous nature of the slower paced storyline. However, the second half really does pick up and with new story content that’ll certainly appeal to longtime fans of the series, Steins;Gate Elite is a worthy visual novel that’s worth jumping into once again.

Steins;Gate didn’t exactly need a redo, but that doesn’t mean that fans of the original won’t absolutely love Steins;Gate Elite. The new scenes are great, if you don’t miss the stills that is, the ease of play is nice for those that aren’t a fan of complicated puzzles or stressful trials like in Phoenix Wright, and the six different endings make it worth multiple playthroughs.

With how it impressively merges visual novels and anime, Steins;Gate Elite is quite the accomplishment. While some of the fun is lost when a reader doesn’t have to imagine what is happening on-screen, it’s still extremely fun to just sit back and enjoy an excellent story filled with entertaining twist and turns. It proves to be a quality time investment no matter if it’s your first time experiencing the time travel adventure or you’re revisiting it.

Even if I wasn’t super crazy about them, the use of animated cutscenes here is excellent, and really helps move the title along during it’s slower moments. And once you get past those lagging moments, you’re thrust into an intricately designed world with an abundance of heart, intrigue, and intellect. If you’re new to the visual novel genre, there’s no better place to start than 5pb’s tale of time travel run amok.

This may not be the definitive way to experience the series, but it's damn sure the most accessible, and it beats the hell out of the neutered anime adaptation. For new fans, this is a fantastic entry point. For returning fans, Steins;Gate Elite is a solid reason to revisit a beloved series with a fresh set of eyes. I adored every second of it.

It’s surprising just what an impact the new animations have in Steins;Gate Elite -- the additions take an already excellent visual novel and makes it feel much more dynamic and intense. What's more, being able to finally play Linear Bounded Phenogram in English is just the icing on an already very scrumptious cake. Elite is the complete visual novel package, and pretty much the best that the genre has to offer.

Despite some small annoyances that are either confusing or intrusive to the overall immersion that Steins;Gate Elite provides, this was a genuinely fun and engaging experience. In fact, because of how graphically close it is to the anime and how intense and complex the narrative is, Steins;Gate Elite is smooth as butter from start to finish and captures the true meaning of a graphic novel come to life.

Steins;Gate Elite is an incredible achievement, with a fantastic and involved narrative arc, deep character development, and stunning visuals. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this is the best visual novel I have ever played, blowing previous experiences out of the water.

Overall the more questionable content in the game is certainly troubling, but that doesn't stop the plot as a whole being very good. As a game, it already had a great narrative about time travel with some strong characters included, but with these new visuals and updated package it's the most complete way to experience Steins;Gate, even if you've played the first and watched the anime already.

A wonderfully offbeat and toweringly engaging story wrapped up with some of the most interesting characters you’ll meet in a while and some truly sublime presentation, Steins;Gate Elite is quite simply one of the best visual novels available on PS4 right now and a great starting point for folks that are new to either Steins;Gate or the visual novel genre at large.
