STEINS;GATE ELITE is fully remastered with animated scenes from the anime, creating a perfectly new, immersive experience. The game follows a rag-tag band of tech-savvy young students who discover the means of changing the past via e-mail using a modified microwave. Their experiments in pushing the boundaries of time begin to spiral out of control as they become entangled in a conspiracy surrounding SERN, the organization behind the Large Hadron Collider, and John Titor, who claims to be from a dystopian future.

Even if I wasn’t super crazy about them, the use of animated cutscenes here is excellent, and really helps move the title along during it’s slower moments. And once you get past those lagging moments, you’re thrust into an intricately designed world with an abundance of heart, intrigue, and intellect. If you’re new to the visual novel genre, there’s no better place to start than 5pb’s tale of time travel run amok.
While Steins;Gate Elite certainly delivers a storyline that’s unconventional and interesting once you get through the first couple of chapters, new players may be turned off early on due to the monotonous nature of the slower paced storyline. However, the second half really does pick up and with new story content that’ll certainly appeal to longtime fans of the series, Steins;Gate Elite is a worthy visual novel that’s worth jumping into once again.
Those minor problems aside, Steins;Gate Elite is definitely the best way to get into this property. It has all the charm of the anime, all the narrative excellence of the original, and a refinement that hasn’t existed in either up until this point. For new fans or veterans alike, Steins;Gate Elite is well worth the pick-up, and should represent a potential starting point for future visual novels looking to make a similar impact.
