Sonic Colors: Ultimate has its pitfalls, but I couldn't help but still enjoy a good majority of my time revisiting one of the better 3D Sonic games. The cleverly designed levels explode with colours and vibrant detail, the sense of speed is still unmatched, the soundtrack is wonderful, and the Wisps add some nice variations to the gameplay. Sadly, this is all undercut by some annoying bugs and glitches, and that same jarring shift from 3D to 2.5D that has plagued most modern Sonic titles. If you're a fan of the original game, there's nothing here that will surprise you, but for newcomers, you can experience one of the better 3D Sonic games.

All of that alone makes it worth playing, particularly since Colors is without question the best implementation of the so called “boost” formula as well. The stumbles and blemishes that come along the way, well, that’s just part and parcel of being a Sonic fan at this point. Embrace them, and enjoy Dr. Eggman’s Wild Ride.

There's always that balance between arduous and speedy gameplay that somehow just keeps bringing players back to go faster until they reach their personal peak. The instances where I personally feel inclined to do this in Sonic Colors: Ultimate are so far and few between. It's fun, but it's not the sort of fun that brings me back to this series far too much for someone my age.
