Shantae: Risky’s Revenge: Director’s Cut could have used some help with its map system, but literally everything else is spot-on. Much like Shovel Knight and Mighty No. 9, you get a game that doesn’t just pay homage to 16-bit classics — it would have been revered in that era as well. It’s a smooth-playing, gorgeous-looking game that excels in nearly everything it does, gives platforming fans something to sink their teeth into on PS4.
Shantae: Risky's Revenge is a solid game. Inoffensive gameplay and a light challenge paired with pleasing retro art and music blend to create a thoroughly pleasing experience. The game isn't particularly innovative or surprising, but at the end of the day, it's good fun. Given that this is a slow period for new releases, you could do much worse than shaking your booty to this.
The Shantae series has been missed by numerous gamers - quite criminally, in fact - and Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut is definitely worth a purchase for those new to the genre to experience what it has to offer. The entire series is superb and should be more recognised in the 2D platforming world, as it is easily on par with the best of them. It's a shame there isn't any cross-buy or cross-save on PS Vita, and a more significant graphical overhaul, which would have easily made it something special.
