With the series celebrating its 10th anniversary, the main Story Mode has been overhauled, with two primary ways to play: Regional play, which focuses on the heroic actions of individual warriors throughout the land and A Land United, which focuses on the final years of the turbulent Warring States period. No fewer than fifty brave warriors play out this rich historical tapestry.

Great things were expected of Samurai Warriors 4 and, thankfully, the sequel has delivered on a number of levels. Though it still carries the same old Musou blueprint, and so there’s little to draw in those who dislike its particular brand of hack n’ slash action, there are enough changes to attract any self-respecting fan of the series.

Overall Samurai Warriors 4 sounds traditionally Japanese, and that helps take you back to the era. As is probably pretty evident by this point, if you’re a fan of the Warriors games, you should definitely pick up Samurai Warriors 4. ...You can even learn a surprising thing or two about Japanese history in the process! While the combat can get repetitive, cranking up the difficulty and playing with lower-level characters can be a sure-fire way to keep the challenge up.

Though Samurai Warriors 4 isn’t the most polished game out there, it is a hell of a lot of fun. The new features add some much needed change to the games system and Chronicle mode is engaging and fun. Unfortunately I was unable to check out the cooperative mode in the game, but co-op play in any of the Warriors games is always a good time. It is playable locally on one console or through online play too.
