The game felt alienating so early on and I had to force myself a number of times to keep playing. There was great scope here to hit home a message of protest, unity, banding together for a common cause — all of which were lost. Riot is a difficult game to control that will try the patience of even the most ardent RTS player.
Riot: Civil Unrest has the look and feel a good RTS with entertaining yet challenging gameplay sections, but it all feels a bit weird when considering a) these sections are based on real events, and b) that the gameplay is fun and entertaining, but really only when you play as the protesters.
All in all, RIOT: Civil Unrest had the potential to be something great, but the control system, along with the general confusion that we felt while playing let it down. There was quite a bit to unlock and it looked great, but it never quite hit the mark we were hoping for. Sure, it became more fun as we got to grips with things, but the whole experience was let down by the issues we've highlighted and the game sadly never managed to live up to its undeniable potential.
