Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV, a virtual reality (VR) simulation game, takes place within Eos, an Earth-like fantasy world that serves as the setting for the 2016 role-playing game Final Fantasy XV. The player, while interacting with main protagonist Noctis Lucis Caelum and his three companions, takes part in fishing in ponds, hunting and catching various fish. A major goal is catching the titular "monster", a powerful fish which can attack the player and end the game. As a VR-based experience, players have a 360 degree view of their surroundings.

Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV is not what I wanted from a Final Fantasy VR game. It wasn’t anything close to what I expected. But in the end, I wound up being pleasantly surprised. While far from a meaty experience, what’s there is all good stuff. If this is Square Enix testing the water – so to speak – with VR, then I hope there’s much more to come from them on this platform.
Once I’d experienced my first fish explosion and got over how thirsty all of the Final Fantasy XV characters were being, Monster of the Deep just felt like a chore. It doesn’t have a story, which would be fine if the mechanics were on point. The fishing and combat both feel tedious and repetitive. You get one weapon upgrade about halfway through, but it operates the same way as your previous one. You’re just pointing and shooting with no real strategy aside from memorizing one or two patterns of movement.
Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV has its own virtual reality quirks, but the game is much more than the sum of its parts. Monster of the Deep may be the first PlayStation VR game that I would recommend across the board to anyone with the hardware to play it. However, anyone who has played a good amount of Final Fantasy XV will get more out of the experience than others.
