Overall, MLB The Show 18 takes the good parts from last year’s game, but doesn’t build on the series’ winning formula. The unnecessarily expansive menu system is annoying, controls could be hard to learn for new comers, and camera could be much better. Despite its issues, MLB The Show 18 is a fun entry but it doesn’t top its phenomenal predecessor.

Overall, MLB The Show 18 is likely to draw in any baseball game fan because of its solid gameplay, engaging story mode, and customization options. The game's graphics are superb, the soundtrack is one of the best on offer from a sports game this year, and the gameplay is enough to entice any MLB fan, casual or pro. However, a big downside of the game is the Diamond Dynasty mode.

On paper this may not sound like a substantial step forward for the series, but the under-the-hood improvements mean that it’s the best playing, best looking version yet. We’re not sure where Sony San Diego goes next with this series, but we say that every year, and it continues to smash our expectations out of the park.

MLB The Show 18 remains one of the most beautiful and polished sports sims around. If you're a new player, it'll be simply dazzling. If you're a veteran though, you'll be more apt to notice missing modes, network errors, and an increasingly bloated Diamond Dynasty. It's a great all-around baseball sim, but this year's update is as conservative as ever.

The strength of the MLB The Show series has always been its authentic gameplay, which traditionally does a fantastic job capturing the essence of baseball. The 2018 version of The Show continues that trend, creating the most realistic baseball game to date. However, the nuanced gameplay and visual changes don’t quite make up for the lack of innovation – or removal – of MLB The Show’s core modes.

Each incarnation of The Show I've played has been better than the last, and MLB The Show 19 keeps pace. I do wonder, however, if there is a "next level" coming for the series or if we're content to accept a layer or two of steady improvements for the next few editions. I'll take it. After all, it's a long season.

Beyond that, in a similar vein to soccer or hockey games, MLB: The Show 18 is an enjoyable, competitive, multiplayer experience that can easily be enticing to non-sports fans if they simply look past the baseball veneer to see the mechanically sound, tactile, multi-faceted game below the surface; you don’t need to watch or play baseball for the game to function as a more than serviceable pastime and I recommend a rental to anyone who is on the fence about getting into this genre.

Overall, MLB The Show 18 is the best iteration of the series thus far, for the most part improving in all aspects of the game. While keeping player freedom as an option in Road to the Show would have been nice, the mode is still enjoyable. For a yearly release with not as much development time (given continual content additions and marketing needs), the game may not be as different as some may have hoped.

There’s one huge elephant in the room when talking about MLB The Show 18, though. That’s the online servers, which have been erratically offline since the game launched. That kills a majority of the non-career focused modes such as Diamond Dynasty and the weekly challenge.

MLB The Show 18 offers a ton of options for new players to craft their own experiences while still giving veteran players the level of depth they’d expect from the latest entry in a series that’s been totally refined over the years.

Load times for all avenues of play are better, and the play on the field is once again a showpiece of iteration, but the online aspect of the game – where Sony is focusing the most for additions – remains unpredictable at best and completely broken at its worst. As the season goes along, the experience will hopefully get better, but for the hardcore baseball fans that purchased the game early, it can be a nightmare.

Sony's flagship baseball franchise has never been better. With its best-in-class controls and visuals, and impeccable attention to detail for the small stuff, MLB The Show 18 is worth catching for any baseball fan.

PlayStation 4 is the only place to get the best and most authentic baseball experience there is. MLB The Show 18 incorporates plenty of content to keep players busy while offering the best visuals and strongest core gameplay in a sports simulation. Franchise Mode feels more intuitive, Diamond Dynasty is loaded with Legends and many different outlets to score more cards, and Road to the Show is the best version the series has seen.

MLB The Show 18 touches up some places and refines others. Despite missing online franchise, The Show 18 slings a complete game, even if it has a couple of problems on base.

Despite some technical issues, I would recommend MLB The Show 18. It’s a solid enough game and it does offer a lot for serious baseballers while still being pretty fun and approachable for guys like me who might just want to play some arcade-style baseball with friends. While I did wish it had a little more to make it a more complete experience, I don’t regret my time with it.
