MLB The Show 17 is an ambitious game that tries to dazzle players with new avenues of play and a story, but is at its best on the field, where the action has never looked or played better. After slumping last year, Sony came back firing with an experience that feels new again, even if its foundation stretches back over a decade.

At first blush, MLB The Show 17 is more of the same; but when taken together, it's actually a great update. It brings with it a lot of small but much-needed tweaks to the play on the field, and the graphics have never looked so good. Even better, Franchise mode actually feels approachable now. It leaves some opportunities on the table, but MLB The Show is still a great baseball sim that feels that much better with this year's update.

Just like its real-life counterpart, MLB The Show 17 has become antiquated by today’s standards. Novel ideas that it once spearheaded have grown into tired old clichés that other franchises have expanded and improved upon. The Show 17 is fundamentally sound, but doesn’t move the sports genre forward. It will appease longtime fans that flock to it year after year, but until the series does something remarkably different, it’ll fall short of being able to stand out of the pack. This year’s version of The Show does a lackluster job of making it seem like anything more than a yearly roster update built upon the same foundation of last year’s game and that is by far the heaviest critique that can be handed down to any yearly sports title.

MLB The Show 17 sets a new pinnacle for the franchise. It creates more depth for its tent pole modes and polishes everything else to a terrific gleam. Some online issues and glitches still continue to plague the series at launch, but you might get so engrossed in Franchise or RTTS that you won’t even notice until they’re fixed.

Sony has rarely struck out with their annual MLB The Show series and this year’s entry manages to keep that hit streak going. The visuals and presentation are the best they’ve ever been with a number of new hit animations and a revamped commentary team that simulate the MLB Network experience. With the worthwhile improvements to Road to the Show and Franchise mode and the incredibly fun Retro Mode, San Diego Studio has really knocked it out of the park with MLB The Show 17.

MLB The Show 17 is objectively a very good game, though the improvements made overall were not as significant as one might have thought. Specifically, Road to the Show still felt very similar and Retro Mode could have been incorporated into other modes. When not compared to previous iterations of the series, MLB The Show 17 is a great baseball game with something for everyone.

The Show is mostly fantastic, then, yet one holdover issue has to impact on its final score. Namely, online play. Matches themselves are mostly lag-free, but getting into them in the first place represents a real headache, with last year’s well-documented server patchiness again present throughout the game’s first week in the wild.

MLB The Show 17 continues to iterate without the technical baggage a few games back. Beyond the attempts to monetize players through microtransactions (which mainly work as boosts), I didn't really have any major issues with any given aspect of the game. We're only a few more days out until the 2017 season, and I'm counting on using The Show as my companion for it. Impressive effort with a few noticeable problems holding it back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth most people's time and cash.

MLB The Show 17 continues the series' fantastic tradition of consistency and refinement. Improvements to its various game modes give you more ways to play the game how you want to, and the action on the field has never been better, with smarter fielding AI, and enhanced ball physics that bring the hitting to life.

MLB The Show 17 continues one of the longest running successes in sports video gaming, and it’s not a regression. But its advances sound a lot bigger on paper than they are in practice. The gestures made to Franchise and Road to the Show are nice, but the enjoyability in those modes still mainly rests on good design choices going back years. Time will tell if the changes to MLB the Show 17 establish a new foundation for what is enjoyed five years from now.

To say I’m pleased with my return to the series after a brief hiatus is an understatement. This feels exactly like the Show I remember with some fantastic additions. The only thing that keeps it from getting higher marks are the online connectivity issues and some other small concerns (including some strange ball physics in the outfield that has led to a lot more ground rule doubles than seems realistic).

After years of consistent quality, it almost goes without saying that MLB The Show 17 is a great game. The simulation makes several significant evolutionary steps forward, while still not losing sight of the genre’s storied past. Both newcomers and veterans will find something to appreciate in this year’s outing, along with a little bit of nostalgic appeal sprinkled throughout for good measure. There has never been a better time to become a card-carrying member of The Show Nation.

Controls are flawless, graphically the Show is about as good as we’re going to get before hitting that uncanny valley. The only rough spots are the stilted commentary and repetitive scenes in the Path modes. But it all fades away when you’re fielding a line drive and turn a double play, or when you crack a ball into the right field bleachers and watch your own hometown hero round the bases pumping his fist in the air. This is America’s Pastime still, even if its status as such has taken a backseat to the NBA and NFL.

It’s always easy to recommend The Show, and even easier on its best years. While there are still a few rough spots, it’s hard to look at this year’s edition and not come away impressed by the sheer amount of content and modes, as well as the polished gameplay and player experience improvements. This is a gigantic care package of baseball, with countless ways to play the game for both hardcore and fair weather fans alike.

MLB The Show 17 as a collective whole, from a controls, presentation, and core game mode perspective, is incrementally better. That might seem like a negative but, in fact it’s a huge positive. Nothing kills a franchise more than when the developers deciding to revamp everything and start fresh. MLB The Show 17 takes a progressive, but tactful, step forward. The aforementioned enhancements are exactly that, improvements that truly make the game better.

Tons of gameplay modes for both single and multiplayer components, huge improvements in lighting tech and character models, awesome moment to moment gameplay, Retro mode is a blast. With a ton of content to offer, MBL The Show 17 is perhaps the best sports game on the PS4, both from gameplay and visual perspectives.

Chi ha acquistato MLB The Show 16 cosa dovrebbe fare?
