How much Mega Man 11 is expected to reinvent the wheel is by nature subjective. Despite its reserved approach, it undeniably slots in very nicely with the classic series while bringing our old friend into a new era. The big finish could have been a little more mega, but it succeeds in pulling off the gargantuan task of getting people to care about Mega Man again.
The robot bosses are mostly bland and familiar (with the exception of the very silly Block Man – I love that guy), and their imparted weapons are a hit-and-miss collection. But Mega Man plays like he should even with the cutesy but tolerable art style, and that’s good because the challenge is cranked up to 11 and getting through these levels takes old-school precision and patience. Mega Man 11 is a good foundation for the next 10 Mega Man games.
Mega Man 11 is one of the rare instances where I’m forced to ask myself, is this a perfect game? Unfortunately, the answer is no, but it’s still pretty damn close. The Power Gear ability, for instance, is rarely as useful as it’s Speed Gear counterpart. I barely used it at all, to be honest. There is also a disappointing lack of Protoman or Bass, two fan-favourite characters that we haven’t seen enough of in recent years.
