Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is a somewhat flawed masterpiece. Addictive and brutal, it often walks the line between making you feel a sense of accomplishment and disdain. Whilst it goes out of its way to be grander than the original (and on the whole succeeds), its bigger levels and erratic difficulty unfortunately separate it from its predecessor unfavourably.
All of this is exacerbated by the fact that Hotline Miami 2 just plain outstays its welcome. Having replayed the first game immediately prior to starting the second, it’s amazing what a drastically different experience I had between the two. No level in the original tripped me up for too long, and the number of enemies between checkpoints offered a challenge without slowing the satisfyingly brisk pace.
Altogether Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is everything the first game was, with improvements that change and evolve the game enough to feel like its own bloodthirsty monster. Playing as a variety of characters keeps your skills sharp and there are a ton of levels to master and enjoy.
