Though it’s not without fault, and will likely do little to take away from Fortnite’s ever-growing popularity, H1Z1 on PS4 is a worthy addition to the crowded genre. Plus, it’s free. Can’t complain with that.Microtransactions: Yes, you can buy in-game currency for money. It's free to play though, so that's pretty much expected at this point.
Without knowing if or when PUBG might come to PS4, H1Z1: Battle Royale gives players an ample replacement if they’d rather not get into Fortnite. Daybreak just needs to start hosting some interesting events and updates in order to keep players hooked and interested going forward. I wouldn’t say no to a little bit of work on those visuals either. Until then, I think I’ll just go watch the movie that inspired this whole gaming trend.
Overall, H1Z1 may be a pioneer of the Battle Royale craze, but in the games current form, it just cannot stack up against PUBG and Fortnite due to its lack of focus, polish, and overall content. It’s ambitious map size and player count work against the overall interest of the game’s flow, often making matches feel stretched beyond necessity to no real benefit.
To me, H1Z1 seemed to have missed a perfect opportunity to make a big splash on consoles. While the Xbox One version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is still extremely buggy and runs at a terrible framerate, H1Z1 could have swooped in, taken their thunder, and provided the best tactical/realistic battle royale experience on console.
Solid is the word I would use to describe H1Z1: Battle Royale on PlayStation 4. It’s not the prettiest of games or the most clever, but it does what it does really well and it is a great alternative for those who find all the tree chopping and base building in Fortnite very tiresome. H1Z1 is off to a great start on PlayStation 4 and I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.
It's not particularly meaty yet and it needs a fair bit of work done on its visual side, but H1Z1 Battle Royale is a fine alternative to Fortnite for PS4 players. The redesign of the game for consoles has gone pretty well, and there's more joy and cohesion in squad games compared to its PS4 competition. At the grand old price of free, it deserves a chance if you're seeking something a little more grounded for your Battle Royale buck.
