As a whole, Final Fantasy VII is not a bad game, but it's certainly quite far from the flawless gem that almost everyone was talking about back in the day… and yet it has managed to resonate to the hearts of hundreds of thousands, mainly because, despite the boringly easy battles, aged visuals, and various other issues it has, underneath it all there's a fantastic, well-presented story, with an awesome cast that's hard not to fall in love with, and an engrossing world that grabs and never lets go.
Even 18 years after its original release, its overall quality is clear to see, despite its often dated visuals. A superbly paced plot, a brilliant cast of characters, and a punchy battle system combine to create a fantasy that remains an absolute classic, and a game that's well worth playing all over again.
It is a year later than planned, but is more ironed out than any other version with the optional cheats and Trophies. A steadily-paced story, sterling soundtrack and unmatched character building system keep this title still relevant in the packed world of role-playing games. Whether it be for nostalgic purposes or simply to see what all the fuss is about, this edition of Final Fantasy VII is worthy of a fresh journey, and will surely compliment the impending remake nicely.
