I actually came away really surprised by DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles‘ first episode. It could have been a cheap and easy cash-in, but it’s clear a lot of love was put into the episode to make it both fun to play and feel like a part of Voltron’s universe. Sure, it may need some work and an overhaul to its controls, and future episodes could stand to be longer, but fans of Voltron who own a VR headset should check this out. If you’re not a fan, it may just make you one.

Voltron VR Chronicles is an amazingly immersive way to jump into a Saturday morning cartoon, something I’ve only dreamed of my entire life. It’s not going to provide an engaging gameplay experience for anyone looking for a challenge, but it’s an innovative new way to participate in the action of a popular animated series.

Dreamworks Voltron VR Chronicles is surprisingly not terrible. In fact, it’s actually a fun, faithful, and polished love letter for fans of the franchise with some awesome moments that anyone would enjoy. What a shame, then, that the experience is completely let down at the end by robbing you of the chance to actually play as the titular machine. But, if you can accept that this is a Voltron experience without actual Voltron gameplay, there’s some Saturday morning thrills to be had here.
