In the end, I’m still happy to have played Donut County. Any game that makes me laugh is a solid game in my book. I enjoyed watching objects fall into holes, even if I wished the game did more with the concept. Each time I saw a quadcopter designed like a raccoon I laughed, then wished the gameplay elements were as good as the visual ones. Still, if you’re ready for a creative idea that you can a zone out to, Donut County is a solid choice.
I wished the story was longer and the game had more things to do besides capturing things in a hole. But the story was lighthearted and the gameplay was fun. If you don’t have high expectations, I think you’ll find Donut County is a nice diversion.
You’ll want to consume everything, making the void of consumption grow ever larger. No, I’m not talking about getting addicted to Twitter or Reddit. I’m talking about Donut County. It’s brilliant, it’s charming, and it’s simple, but I would never call this hole shallow. It holds a depth in its tranquil destruction, a surprisingly refreshing and unique experience, on the (w)hole.
