None of that is enough to make Disintegration anything other than a great first game, in what I hope becomes a series. When Disintegration’s satisfying first-person shooter gameplay clicks with the intuitive real-time-strategy elements, it’s really good. For RTS fans, there’s enough strategy to get you through, and for newcomers to the genre, the FPS focus makes a great introduction.
The fact that Disintegration looks and plays like a years-old game isn’t necessarily all bad but it also means that it’s not exactly cutting edge. The actual action is great, helped by streamlined and easy controls, but it’s wasted on repetitive, artificially prolonged missions that make up the campaign that is not too exciting, to begin with.
Even though Disintegration has very enjoyable gunplay and the crew is very easy and useful to utilize, this doesn’t give a pass to the inadequate graphics, the lack of unique enemies, the bugs, an unsatisfying ending, and many other elements of this game that with more time, could have been improved drastically. The game has a very cool concept of combining the first-person shooter genre with a real-time strategy game, but unfortunately lacks the necessity of an entertaining game to back the concept.
